What symptoms should I watch for after my dog ate cycad seeds?

However, it is still warranted to monitor closely for any signs that could be indicative of a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, inappetence and abdominal pain. If these are observed at any point, have Aqua evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible as that may represent a gastrointestinal obstruction which most of the time requires surgery. If this is going to be an issue, usually symptoms can show up to a week after the event typically. Some dogs do develop transient gastrointestinal upset with vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence when they ingest avocado so if she also ate the avocado per se then this may be an issue. Vomiting, diarrhea, increased salivation, tremors, seizures, twitching are the most common signs if an animal eats a pesticide. Most pesticides sprayed on the lawn are not the cause of most cases of vomiting and diarrhea though they tend to always get blamed. If Bella drank from the bottle or ate a lot of the plant with the chemical then the her signs could be from the weed killer. I am glad she is better and if she is eating, drinking and acting fine hopefully all is good now! I hope this helps!

If you are worried she ingested an object, like a sock or shoe then you would watch for signs of gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, lethargy, or straining to defecate. If you are worried about a toxin ingestion these signs can vary widely and can include GI upset, rapid breathing or heart rate, excessive drooling, trembling, seizures, drunken appearance/gait, dilated pupils, pale gums, lethargy. If any of these signs occur seek veterinary care right away.

If Sancho's liver values are elevated due to the ingestion of some foreign material, be it a plant or other toxin, & he is eating with no vomiting or diarrhea, your veterinarian may be taking a wait & watch approach. Usually, we will administer emetics ( to induce vomiting ) & an intestinal absorbant such as charcoal if this was an acute issue. But often we do not see these elevations for hours to days after an insult to the liver has occurred. If Sancho is well, rechecking the values in several weeks is prudent. The values may change by this time. If not, we need to see if this is a chronic issue with the liver, or possibly even the gall bladder. Medications may be need ed at this time, including some neutraceuticals such as Sam-e and milk thistle. It is important that you stay in close contact with Sancho's veterinarian for any recommendations. Take care.

If the vomiting persist or there is bloody diarrhea, then you need to go to an ER clinic tonight. You can take her food and water away for the next 4-6 hours and let her stomach rest. Start back with a small amount of boiled chicken and rice or ice and see how she handles that or if she wants it. If she has no appetite or lethargic still by morning, then go to your regular vet.

It can cause gastro-intestinal upset, labored breathing, eye discharge and sometimes neurologic problems. The most common signs are stomach upset: vomiting, diarrhea, not eating. I am hoping that Buddy's symptoms are mild. If he is eating and has stopped vomiting I would feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or is still vomiting he should see a Vet today for supportive care. I hope this helps and I wish Buddy the best!

I'm sorry to hear that Gizmo isn't feeling well. There are a few issues that could be going on here - the plant could be something that is toxic, Gizmo could have eaten enough of the seed to cause an obstruction or irritation in his intestinal tract, or the vomiting could be entirely unrelated to the seeds. You can call the animal poison control hotline to try to determine if the seed is toxic - you can also try posting a picture here to see if any of our vets are familiar with the plant. ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Phone Number: (888) 426-4435 I would recommend a trip to the vet for evaluation, especially if: - Gizmo has throw up more than a few times - This has been going on for more than 24 hours - There is blood in the vomit - Gizmo is sleepier than normal or doesn't want to eat - Gizmo is drinking a lot more water than normal or needs to go out to the bathroom continuously At the vet, they will likely do a physical exam, take x-rays of his abdomen, and possibly run a general blood work panel. If this only just started and Gizmo is his normal happy self, you can offer a small amount of boiled chicken and rice this evening, see if it settles down.
