My puppy ate boxwood flowers and is vomiting. Is it an emergency?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 4 months and 16 days old | 22 lbs

Our 17 week old mixed breed, 22 lb pup ate some dried boxwood flowers that fell into our yard from the neighbor's tree. She's thrown up 3X, drank some water and now seems tired but comfortable and happy. Should I be concerned?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Maddie. So the Boxwood tree is actually very poisonous to dogs, and in small dogs, it does not take too much to cause severe toxic symptoms, even death. One sign of toxicity is vomiting. Now without seeing her in person, I can't say if she will be ok and because this can be very serious, she should see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
