My dog ate brush bristles and is lethargic. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 10 months and 9 days old | 13 lbs

My dog ate all of the bristles on my brush and he is laying around now and he is usually really active. He is a 13 lb Maltese. What do I do? Should I be concerned?

I would be concerned about Snowball in that these bristles may have upset his stomach, or potentially did damage to his GI tract if they were sharp. I would monitor him tonight, and if he's still acting lethargic in the morning, I would have him seen by a vet for a health check. Should he start vomiting, become very lethargic, there's blood in the vomit, has bloody feces, or becomes anorexic, I would take him into a vet right away.
