My dog ate a whole box of Milk-Bone dental chews. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 80 lbs

my 80 lb lab ate a box (12 or 14) large milk bone dental chews. I just got home and was out for 3 hours. Wondering what I should do for him? He appears to be ok at the moment but not sure if I should be worried.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Percy causing trouble while you were out. He was hungry!! Honestly I don't think they he is going to have any serious problems from this. I would be careful about how much water he consumes tonight. He can have a few sips but don't let him gulp down a whole bowl of water after eating all of those bones. As long as he seems comfortable, can lay down, is not dry heaving, does not have a distended abdomen that is rigid, isn't crying/moaning in pain, I think you are ok tonight. I would get up every few hours and check on him if you can. If any of the signs above develop, I would get him evaluated ASAP by a vet. Bloat is possible especially if he drank a really large quantity of water following his gorging out on the bones. Good luck with Percy. If he develops diarrhea and/or vomiting he would have to be evaluated and treated accordingly also.

My small dog ate a big edible Nylabone too fast. Is he okay?

Wow, Ernie at a lot in one day! This could give him an upset stomach from eating this much, so I would monitor him for now. Should he have an upset stomach and starts vomiting or having diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then add back in his normal diet. Next time, I would give him one that is more for his size, and try not to let him eat it so quickly. Easier said than done I imagine :-)

The good news is there are no ingredients that are toxic, so you don't have to do anything for him. At most, you may see some stomach upset in the form of diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite. If you do see those signs, then have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

This may not be enough to cause any problems, and I would just keep an eye on them. Rest them, avoid taking them for a walk, and don't give them any more food until the morning. My dog ate too many Dentalife treats at once. Should I be worried?

This should not be a problem, however I would reduce his evening meal by approximately the amount of the treats. The worst that might happen is that your dog gets diarrhea or a tummy upset. If that happens, feed boiled white rice and white chicken for a day and then transition back to his normal food. Hide the treats on top of the kitchen cabinets!

My dog ate bones from a dead animal. Is it dangerous? What to do?

Hello. Other than the possibility of either dog vomiting up the bones in the middle of the night, they probably will be fine. Bones, while not recommended to be fed, will be digested. If this was a large carcass, like from a deer or cow, a dog can consume enough bone to either cause a blockage of severe constipation. But since this was a much smaller critter, I see no problems. Disease/parasite problems are nil, but may be a very small possibility. If your dogs are on a broad spectrum heartworm preventative, they are covered for parasites, otherwise a good wormer would not hurt. Watch for any signs of abdominal discomfort, prolonged diarrhea, inappetence or vomiting that lasts longer for a day or so, but if there are no issues, the bones will be gone in the next 12-18 hours. My dog ate chew bones and is sick and won't eat. What should I do?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If Scooby has been lethargic and not eating, especially after eating 3 chew bones, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having abdominal x-rays taken to see if he has developed a foreign object intestinal obstruction from the bone chews. He may also be dehydrated, have pancreatitis, etc. It is impossible for me to say for sure without examining him and performing diagnostics. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
