My dog accidentally took an extra Apoquel dose. Will she be okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 50 lbs

I accidentally gave my dog an extra dose of Apoquel and wanted to know if she will be ok.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is very little information available in the literature about overdosage of this drug. However, there was a study were dogs received 6 times the normal dose for several weeks and mostly only gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence were observed. I think that Tippy is most likely going to be just fine though keep a close eye on her and if any of the clinical signs described above are observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. In the future if you have an emergent question (especially pertaining to possible medication toxicity) it is best to call your local ER vet as we are not an emergency service and cannot guarantee an immediate response.

Your dog should be just fine having eaten those medications. The apoquel and thyroid medication doses are not worrisome at all. The normal Vetoryl dosing for dogs is 1-3mg/pound so at 12 pounds, a 10mg tablet should not be a problem.

Apoquel has a fairly wide margin of safety in dosing. At worst, you may see some minor GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea) and maybe a slight decrease in appetite. Further treatment likely will not be needed unless symptoms persists for more than 24-48 hours.

This is a rather big overdose, but this drug is relatively safe to overdose. Signs of an overdose can be vomiting and muscle tremors. If you don't see any of these after eight hours, then she will be fine. If you do see vomiting and tremors, then it's best to take her to the vet for treatment and monitoring. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The use of apoquel in is not common place yet. Some Vet are starting to use it. The dose is 5.4mg/adult cat. But the dose isn't based on conclusive studies. I think that Toast will be fine. We just don't know the side effects well in cats. But I think that one slightly increased dose shouldn't be a problem. My puppy took Apoquel and Temaril-P not meant for him. Is he okay?

Hubert may develop mild symptoms of gastroenteritis (for example vomiting or a bout of diarrhoea) but there should not be any more serious side effects. Please, monitor him at home for now and if you notice any worrying symptoms, get him checked by your local vets.

My dog accidentally got a double dose of Simparica. Is she okay?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center with your question about Rockelle. She should be ok. According to studies done by Zoetis who make Simparica, "In the overdose groups, transient and self-limiting neurological signs were observed in some animals: mild tremors at 3 times the maximum exposure dose and convulsions at 5 times the maximum exposure dose. All dogs recovered without treatment." You don't need to do anything. I hope this helps!

My dog is on Apoquel. Are there long-term side effects? Is it safe?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I have several patients that have been on it for a little over a year now and seem to be doing quite well on it. The one thing we routinely monitor is a complete blood count to make sure the immune system is not being suppressed, which Apoquel has been known to do in some patients. Other than that, I really do not see any other side effects of using Apoquel. I hope this helps! She should be fine to get her second dose a bit early. Go ahead with her second dose at midnight and then resume her normal every 12 hr schedule tomorrow. : ) I hope that Lily’s new medication helps to control her allergies! Take care.

My dog accidentally got a double carprofen dose. Is she okay?

Hi there, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Fortunately, in my experience, it's very uncommon for a single extra dose of carprofen to cause any significant problems. With NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) overdoses in dogs, the two things we're most concerned about are stomach ulcers and possible kidney damage. These usually occur with doses above 20 mg/kg, which for a 25 pound dog would be about 227 mg. Since Tootsie only got 50 mg total this morning (about 4.4 mg/kg), it's unlikely that you will see any serious issues related to this. To be safe, you should monitor her for the next 24 hours for any signs of a problem, such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not eating. If you have any concerns, I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic to be seen.
