My dog took fish oil with vitamin D. Is 1000 IU safe for a 110 lb dog?

Hello. The general rule I apply to possible Vit. D intoxication is a pet can safely handle up to 10000 IU per kg of body weight. That means your 6 pound dog is safe up to 27,000 IU ( which I do not recommend giving ). So you have nothing to worry about at this time. Scooter has consumed 0.05mg. Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicosis can be seen with doses as low as 0.1mg/kg, and a lethal dose in a mature dog can be as low as 2mg/kg. He is 7.72kg, so he has consumed 0.0065mg/kg. As you can see, that is under the dose needed for toxicity. Just make sure he does not eat any more! I hope this helps!

The amount of Vitamin D ingested will likely not put a dog of her weight at risk of serious toxicity. Make sure the gummies do not contain xylitol. That would be more dangerous than the Vitamin D. If they contain xylitol,seek veterinary attention immediately. Xylitol is toxic to dogs. It may cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. If the gummies do not have xylitol, the worst you may see is some minor stomach upset.

Hi there! As long as Buddy only ate one tablet, this dose would not be expected to cause any problems. The toxic dose of vitamin D3 in dogs is 100 mcg/kg or above. 5000 IU = 125 mcg, and Buddy weighs about 9 kg, which means he got a total dose of about 14 mcg/kg. This is well below the reported toxic dose, so it's very unlikely that this will be an issue :)

Good morning Ms Yeung! I would not give this supplement to Mochu if it contains D3. Too much vitamin D can be toxic to dogs, as it causes hypercalcemia (increased blood calcium) which can lead to kidney failure, haemorrhage, and tissue mineralization in the heart, liver and kidneys. She will be getting all the vitamin D she needs from her food, and too much will not be good for her. It's fine to give her Omega 3 supplements, but make sure they don't contain extra vitamin D. With the omega fatty acids, she can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. I hope this helps :-)

I would not recommend this strength for a chihuhua and recommend either a smaller strength capsule such as viacutan or a liquid supplement which you can measure more accurately. Excess of any supplementation is undesirable and he would be effectively receiving 3-4 times the recommended amount

It's fine to give dogs the human grade fish oil. Chloe can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. These pills are a little more than that, but it will be fine. She won't need vitamin E supplementation also. I hope this helps!
