Why is my dog still bleeding from his bottom after vet treatment?

Oh my. Poor Ben. Bleeding inside the rectum is not a good sign unfortunately. A mass inside the rectum is a feasible possibility considering the fact that anal gland don’t usually bleed out the rectum in this fashion because a small duct is the only opening to the rectum from the anal glands. It is more likely the bleeding is coming from the colon and a bleeding ulcerated mass has to be seriously considered. Your vet should be able to do a rectal exam and/or endoscopy to look for a possible mass and help you with your decision making moving forward. I hope everything turns out ok for your pet Ben. It sounds like your dog has a rectal polyp. This fleshy bit of tissue is likely what is causing the blood you are seeing in the stool. If the treatment your vet prescribed is not working Jaz may need surgery to remove the polyp. Some vets feel comfortable performing this surgery while others may refer you to a specialist for surgery or endoscopy. I would recommend speaking with your vet about a possible referral to have the polyp removed.

Based on the location, I am concerned that the left anal sac may be the cause for the bleeding. Dogs can develop anal sac abscesses, which is an infection of the anal sac (there are two located at the margin of the anus) that can rupture to the outside. These can be painful and will often require antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to manage pain and allow healing. The other potential is an anal sac mass. Due to Ben's age I would be very concerned for this. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done from home for either of these conditions. It would be recommended to try to find the closest veterinarian to you and have Ben seen. If it is an anal sac mass, these often require surgery and have the potential to be malignant cancers.

Poor Jameson! Bleeding like this could be due to an internal injury, problems with the rectum or anus, parasites in the stool, or irritation/inflammation of the lower GI tract. If his bleeding is not stopping, or has been ongoing a while, it is best to schedule a vet visit to check for these issues and get started on treatment.

Hello! I'm sorry to hear that Boss is bleeding. There's a couple of things I'm concerned it could be. Dogs have two anal glands, one on either side of their anus. They can become impacted and abscessed, which sometimes causes a bloody discharge. If this is the case, he may need to have the infection flushed out thoroughly under sedation and take a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. If Boss is experiencing any changes in defecation, such as constipation or diarrhea, this can sometimes irritate the colon and cause bleeding as well. This would be solved by finding the cause of and treating the underlying constipation or diarrhea. Serious problems, such as blood clotting disorders or cancers, are unfortunately possibilities as well. However, I don't think they are very likely due to his young age. I would recommend having Boss seen by a vet. They can do a physical exam and hopefully find an easily fixable problem and make a plan to get him feeling better. I hope this is helpful! I agree, that is concerning that this hard lump is now bleeding, and this lump could be something serious. It could be a hemangiosarcoma (malignant) or hermangioma (benign), which are tumors that develop from blood vessels and look like a blood blister. Given his age, there is a chance it could be another type of malignant tumor, like a mast cell tumor, but it could also be benign. Unfortunately without seeing him in person, I cannot say for certain. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. It is possible, however other issues such as blocked/infected anal glands, parasites, GI irritation, or underlying illness may also cause bloody stool.
