My dog has a bloody lump near her anus. Is it a hemorrhoid? What now?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 13 years and 7 months old | 39.6 lbs

I just noticed a bluish bulge/lump near my dogs anus with blood on it, I believe it's a hemhorroid but would like to know for sure, It doesn't seem to be causing her pain or discomfort, and I would like to know what I can do for her (at home as well as treatment options by a vet, medications, lifestyle changes etc.)

It is hard to tell for sure by the pictures, but my suspicion would be that it is either a perianal tumor that has bled, or potentially a ruptured anal sac abscess. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If it is an abscess then antibiotics will likely be needed. If it is a tumor then the veterinarian can discuss options with you. Often perianal tumors are benign. I think getting a diagnosis is the first step and then you can gather information and make decisions from there. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

This could very well be an impacted anal gland that got infected and ulcerated. This is quiet common in dogs, especially those with soft stools.

The problem needs to be treated ASAP with antibiotics. If he is licking the area a buster collar will need to be placed as well.

It could also be something else like a tumor or a local infection but either way it needs to be checked by a vet.

Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. It appears that he may have an anal gland abscess which is causing some redness and discharge. These abscesses may grow and rupture from his anal glands becoming impacted. I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian so that they may treat his infection. It sounds like this could be an abscess, but if there is brownish fluid and the lump was located right near her anus, I would be concerned that Chata had an impacted anal sac and that was opened. I would take her into the vet immediately. This area needs to be flushed and cleaned sterilely, and she will likely need antibiotics to prevent infection. Please take Chata into a vet now.

This could be a skin tumor, a small abscess or inflammatory nodule, or a lesion from something like contact hypersensitivity. It could be a benign or malignant growth, or an infected area in the anal tissue. I would keep an eye on it and have it checked by your veterinarian at your next regularly scheduled visit. At this point it nothing to be overly concerned about from the photo. Certainly if it changes at all or causes a problem for your dog then take him in right away to have an exam. I am suspicious that Quora may have an anal sac abscess. These situations usually need antibiotics to resolve. Dog has a bump near his anus. What could it be and what to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. Based on the location, often times these tumors are benign in nature and are known as perianal adenomas though about 10% are malignant and again it could be really any other tumor type. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. I agree, that is concerning that this hard lump is now bleeding, and this lump could be something serious. It could be a hemangiosarcoma (malignant) or hermangioma (benign), which are tumors that develop from blood vessels and look like a blood blister. Given his age, there is a chance it could be another type of malignant tumor, like a mast cell tumor, but it could also be benign. Unfortunately without seeing him in person, I cannot say for certain. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Give his vet a call to make him an appointment. I hope this helps!

Why does my dog have a painful red bump on their anal area?

This occurs when the anal glands do not fully empty during the act of defecation resulting in inflammation, impaction and infection. Have her examined by your veterinarian for confirmation and treatment. This may include sedation followed by lancing, draining and flushing the abscess. Antibiotics and pain management will likely be indicated. Topical treatment may not be sufficient. An e-collar (cone) can be used to prevent licking until she sees the doctor.
