My dog's expressed anal gland fluid is dark brown. Is it normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

When I expressed my dogs anal gland, it was dark brown. Is that normal? When I did it in the past, it was a yellowish liquid.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Dark brown, light brown and yellow are all normal appearances of the anal gland material. Since it is a new color for Casper recheck them in 1 month. But I wouldn't be worried. Worry if the material is green or bloody, that indicates infection.

I hope this helps and I wish you and Casper the best!
