My dog's expressed anal gland fluid is dark brown. Is it normal?

Brownish color to the anal gland secretion is normal. A little reddish tinge to it is not abnormal as small amounts of blood can be produced during the expression. If you saw significant redness or frank blood during their expression, this might be something worth investigating with a vet should you start to see any clinical signs of illness. Hope this helps.

I would continue to monitor Luna's stools for any changes. If you see a pattern that is abnormal (red blood, dark black stool can be a sign of bleeding high in the intestinal tract, gelatinous stools mean the colon may be inflammed or whipworms are present, very light color stools, very loose stools, very dry stools) then you should contact your veterinarian and discuss what is going on. Normal anal sac fluid is clear or pale yellowish-brown. When it's green and white, that can be a sign of anal sac inflammation or infection. I would have Koji seen by a vet. If he does have an infection, he will need antibiotics to treat it.

Hi there, It's normal for there to be mild redness after an expression of the anal glands. This should resolve in the next few days. Since there is no infection, you can use a small amount of vasoline as an emollient cream to help protect his skin barrier. An ice pack would fine as well if he enjoys it, but he may not. Anal glands are scent glands inside the anus that are expressed with defecation. If she was scared suddenly they can accidentally release the anal gland material. The other possibility is that she is starting with diarrhea and some leaked out. Keep an eye on the litter box and see how her stools are. While the smell of anal sac contents is typically quite bad, the material should not be yellow to white. It's normally a brownish color, and so I would be concerned that the color of the expressed material is a sign of infection.
