Is irritation normal after dog anal gland expression? What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

My dog Romeo got his anal glands expressed today. They were full. His bottom is now red. He seems fine though. Is irritation normal after anal gland expression? What can I do?

Hi there,

It's normal for there to be mild redness after an expression of the anal glands. This should resolve in the next few days. Since there is no infection, you can use a small amount of vasoline as an emollient cream to help protect his skin barrier. An ice pack would fine as well if he enjoys it, but he may not.

I do agree with you that the anal area does look a bit red/irritated but that can be common after anal gland expression. If it is not bothering him, I suggest you just monitor the area and let your vet know if there are any significant changes. I'm glad he is eating, pooping and playing normally! That is great!

I’m wondering if Nevis has been licking after his glands were expressed. Usually anal gland expression does not cause redness unless there was already infection or inflammation. You may want to have the vet recheck if you’re concerned or if Nevis has now been licking.

Residual inflammation is normal, especially if the glands were already inflamed. You may call your vet and ask about a course of anti-inflammatory medication. Omega 3 fatty acids can also help. Lastly, a cool (not cold) compress may be a better option to relieve the burning. Sometimes supplements like Glandex can help. If Adam continues to have itchy anal glands, you may want to discuss ruling out food allergies with your vet. I always use a hydrolyzed protein for this. I hope this helps.

This should passwithin 24 hours, but if it appears overly irritated you can apply a thin layer of Desitin (baby rash cream) to the skin around the rectum. Consider using an e-collar (cone) to prevent excessive licking.

Dog licking rectum after neuter, black fluid from anal glands. Normal?

Poor guy. Sometmes it can be a black color if it has been sitting in there for a while. However, this does not indicate that it is infected. It likely just got too full and caused irriation. You can apply a cold compress to the area for now and keep an eye on it. The swelling should subside within the next 24 hrs, even if you didn't express them fully. HOwever, if he is still irritated by Monday its best to take him to your vet to have the glands fully checked and to get him some pet friendly medication to help resolve the inflammation. They are likely not full again but may be a bit irritated due to the expression. If your dog keeps scooting for more than a day or two then I suggest you take him back to your veterinarian for a recheck.

He could be having a problem with his anal gland and have an infection and/or need the glands expressed. If the problem continues than have your vet examine him to determine the cause. Your vet can express his glands, if needed.

My dog's anal glands are irritated. She's scooting. Is Glandex safe?

Hello. The darkened skin is just an indication that there has been some chronic irritation & this can certainly go along with the itching & scooting that goes along with anal gland problems. Anal glands do not atrophy, so by expressing them every week ( which I really do not recommend you continue to do ), I am sure they are now completely empty for the time being. Some people have found Glandex to be helpful. There is absolutely nothing dangerous about trying this & seeing if it is helpful for Tuti.
