My dog is on amoxicillin for UTI. What side effects are common?

This looks like a pretty normal urine puddle for a dog Romeo's size. I think it's encouraging that he's no longer only urinating in small volumes. Signs that his infection would be persisting or worsening include urinating small frequent amounts, straining to urinate, seeing blood in the urine, licking his penis more than normal, or drinking large volumes of water. From what you've described, it sounds as though Romeo is improving so far, but his test on Friday will provide more clarity. Until then, just keep giving the amoxicillin as prescribed. If Bella just started vomiting since starting the Amoxicillin, I would stop giving her the medication and schedule a recheck with your vet. She likely is just sensitive to this medication and will do fine on another one. Try offering her something easily digestible to eat like plain boiled chicken and rice. Amoxicillin usually does not cause dogs to become lethargic or have decreased urine output. It can sometimes cause a decrease in appetite. The symptoms you described seem typical of a UTI. Other differentials would be kidney disease or dehydration from not drinking. If Suzy is not improving on the Amoxicillin, I recommend that you take her back to the vet and have them do a full urinalysis with culture and possibly bloodwork to make sure her kidneys are functioning properly. They should also check her hydration status and administer fluids if needed. Sometimes I have to put dogs on a different antibiotic like Bactrim to get rid or their UTI. Or the UTI is due to a yeast and they need an antifungal agent to treat it. Your veterinarian can switch her meds if needed. The urine culture will tell you what drugs the infection is sensitive to. Hopefully Chappo will only experience GI effects for this overdose. However, in some cases Amoxicillin overdose can cause neurological side effects, elevated liver enzymes and even cardiac issues. Do not give Chappo any more amoxicillin until you are able to get him in to your veterinarian.

I am sorry to hear your pup Zarina may have a urinary tract infection (commonly known as UTIs). Before I explain why, it is not a good idea to start antibiotics. UTIs are frequently caused by bacteria in the urinary bladder or the urethra. Female dogs are more prone to developing UTIs but any dog can be pre-disposed to UTIs if they have any urinary stone formation. Given that we are unsure if Zarina has a UTI, I would recommend a veterinary visit to confirm that she does in fact have one. They typically take a urine sample and look for bacteria and cells. If they see crystals or evidence of possible stone formation, they may recommend a radiograph of her bladder as well. If she does have UTI, it is important to choose the right antibiotic with the right dose and frequency. Typically, dogs are treated for UTIs with a 10-14 day course of antibiotics. Since UTI's can be painful and irritating, I recommend finding a veterinarian sooner rather than later to confirm and get the proper treatment. Most likely this amount of amoxicillin is not going to cause Theodore any harm. However any medication can cause GI irritation like vomiting and diarrhea. IF you notice any diarrhea I would recommend trying a bland diet for 12-24 hours of boiled chicken and white rice. If this does not help than Theodore should go see a vet for medications to resolve the GI upset. Hope that helps . thanks for using pet coach

Hi and thanks for posting! From the pictures, the stools appears to be somewhat firm, formed, but perhaps a little on the softer side which can be normal if this is his usual #2. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic which can cause softer or looser stools to form. if you are worried, you can always bring in a sample to your veterinarian for closer inspection.
