My 12lb dog took 500mg amoxicillin. Is this an overdose? Will he be okay?

Most likely this amount of amoxicillin is not going to cause Theodore any harm. However any medication can cause GI irritation like vomiting and diarrhea. IF you notice any diarrhea I would recommend trying a bland diet for 12-24 hours of boiled chicken and white rice. If this does not help than Theodore should go see a vet for medications to resolve the GI upset. Hope that helps . thanks for using pet coach

I would not be overly concerned, although the recommended dose is 5-10mg/lb (and an 8lb cat would have consumed approx 15mg/lb) it does have a wide safety margin and overdose symptoms are very rare. I would expect some mild gastrointestinal upset and a probiotic would be helpful to reduce the impact on the natural gut balance

Oh no, that was naughty of Baxter! He took about five times the recommended dose of ampicillin. This will likely cause a reaction in the form of vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea, but more serious effects such as tremors or seizures. If you see tremors or seizures, Baxter will have to see a vet immediately. Should you see vomiting and diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

Hello. The normal dose is 12.5mg/kg, however you can give a higher dose as well, sometimes up to 20mg/kg (however this is usually reserved for very severe infections and given IV). A dose for a 34kg dog would be 425mg - so approximately 500mg, twice daily for 10 days. At this dose his kidney/liver should not be affected.

In some individuals, it can cause an upset stomach with vomiting, diarrhea, and/or loss of appetite. For sensitive individuals, this could start after a day or two, but for others, they may have a bit of mildly soft stool near the end of their treatment course. Odds are good that Romeo will be absolutely fine with this medication! It's not a big deal if he has mildly soft stool for a few days. If this happens, just feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually mixing his normal food back in. However, if he refuses to eat or drink, or begins to vomit, stop the amoxicillin and call your vet to discuss switching to a different medication. Clavamox is only available in certain tablet sizes, including 125mg and 250mg. We never want to under-dose antibiotics, so we will often round up to the next best tablet size. As long as Saki is taking the antibiotic with food, GI side effects should be minimal. I hope this is helpful!
