Are my dog's prednisone and amoxicillin doses correct after surgery?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 6 lbs

Lupita had a salivary gland mucocele removed and a dental cleaning yesterday. Today they released her and prescribed 5mg of prednisone once a day and 3cc of Amoxicillin 250mg/5m TWICE a day, she weighs 9lbs - are these doses correct? It seems high and especially being twice a day for a total of 6cc daily. Please let me know.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My fist recommendation would be to call the vet to double check because amoxicillin has a very broad dose range. This is a little bit higher dose than I usually use but may be exactly what your vet wanted. (I would do about 2 cc’s twice daily for most patients her size.)

There is not much harm in higher dosing, other than an increased risk of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea so don’t worry about poisoning Lupita.

Twice daily dosing for the amoxicillin is definitely correct as this drug needs to be in the bloodstream for a sustained time to work properly.

The prednisone dose is fine.

    Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Amoxicillin is a twice a day antibiotic; without knowing the concentration of the liquid, I cannot comment on the dosage, however. If you are concerned, I would check in with her veterinarian in the morning. I hope she recovers well!

Your dog is a big dog. Medications are dosed by weight and therefore the dosage for your dog is correct. Hello. I wonder if perhaps the labels were mixed up. Normally, Doxycycline would be prescribed at 5-10 mg/kg ( 136-272 mg ) every 12 - 24 hours & the niacinamide 500 mg every 8 hours. Now if your vet actually sent home tetracycline, then the dose would be 500 mg every 8 hours. But if the Doxycycline was substituted for the Tetracycline, then the total dose should be less. How much amoxicillin for a chihuahua after pyometra surgery?
Without a legal relationship, which in most states means that a physical examination has been performed on the pet, we cannot recommend specific drugs and dosages. I would recommend calling the vet who performed the surgery back and requesting guidance. I would also comment that amoxicillin is not a very good choice for post-op treatment of pyometra, and Gina needs something more broad-spectrum such as Clavamox or Baytril for at least 14 days.

The picture I am seeing does not show much evidence of infection but of course take her in first thing in the morning to have someone evaluate in person. There is not a whole lot I would recommend doing tonight. If the area seems painful you can wrap an ice pack in a thin cloth or paper towel and ice the area for 5-10 minutes. That bandage should probably be changed every 24-48 hours so if that has not been done I would do that if possible. If not, consider leaving it off overnight if she won’t scratch at it. The prednisone is very unlikely to be the culprit of any of the signs you are seeing. Best of luck to you and Lupita.

Immunosuppressive and anti-neoplastic dosages range from 2mg to 4mg per kg of body weight per day for dogs so this sounds about right. However, I would still make sure you double check with Chloe's vet to confirm if you are concerned.
