Why combine amoxicillin & what dog pain medication replaces Rimadyl?

Yes there are no drug interactions listed between these drugs. Tramadol is an opioid used for mild to moderate pain and Rimadyl is an NSAID, a different class of pain medication which works through reducing inflammation. These two can be given together. Metronidazole and clavamox are two antibiotics which hit different kinds of bacteria, and are usually given together if there is a severe infection .All of these can be given together,

This is a tough question and I can understand why you are confused on what to do. If you are concerned your dog is in pain and that the Galliprant is not helping then it may be time to switch pain medications or add in another medication to see if your dog gets some added relief. I have found that some NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) work better in certain dogs than in others. I usually encourage my clients to switch NSAIDs if they don’t feel like one is working particularly well for their dog. It is very similar in humans, some prefer Alieve while others prefer Advil. All drugs have potential side effects to be aware of and it is up to your veterinarian to decide which of those would be safest for your dog based on your dog’s previous medical history. It sounds as if your dog is otherwise happy and healthy so he could be a good candidate to try Deramaxx. If you were my client, I would probably recommend adding in an additional pain controlling drug before switching to another NSAID since Jackie is doing well on the Galliprant. I will add though that I have prescribed Deramaxx several times over the years and do not feel like I see more reactions with it than with any other drug. It's perfectly safe for Toby to receive Rimadyl after having Claro applied. The Claro has minimal systemic absorption and works only in the ear canal to treat the infection, so it does not interact with other medications. I hope that Toby's ear infection resolves quickly!

Apoquel- for controlling atopic dermatitis (allergies) Antirobe- antibiotic usually for the mouth Rimadyl- anti-inflammatory, has many uses Cephalexin- antibiotic used for many different organs including bladder, skin, abdominal organs, etc I am not sure what is hurting him however if you feel he is in pain then it's best to take him to your vet for proper pain management or discuss humane euthanasia. I am sorry your pet is in such critical condition and hope you can get him some help soon.

It sounds like quite a serious periodontal issue - I hope he's feeling better soon :( Generally speaking, all of the medications you have listed are safe to be given together - none of them would be expected to have any harmful interactions. Metacam is an anti-inflammatory medication, tramadol and gabapentin are pain medications that work in different ways and are often used together, Clavaseptin and metronidazole are antibiotics that both cover different types of bacteria, and Cerenia is an anti-nausea medication that also has some anti-inflammatory effects.

Sorry to hear about Clive. The mainstay treatments for orthopedic injuries are pain killers and anti inflammatories (NSAIDs). Since there may be a spinal / neural component to this, neuropathic medications and muscle relaxants may also come in very helpful especially during times of additional breakthrough discomfort. The type of medication to be dispensed will ultimately be a discussion with your primary vet, but NSAIDs that are common include carprofen (Rimadyl), deracoxib (Deramaxx), and meloxicam (Metacam). Other medications are things like opioids including tramadol and hydrocodone. In terms of the back, I would consider medications like gabapentin and methocarbamol to address this. There is another medication that I use in patients with refractory pain called amantadine, but I find it only effective when used in conjunction with NSAIDs. The periodic or daily use of many of these medications should be coupled with blood work at least twice yearly to be sure liver and kidney values are not elevating. So Gabapentin has many uses including pain relief, and when used with Galliprant, it provides even better pain control from arthritis. Using them in combination is likely why you are seeing her act more energetic than being on the Galliprant alone. Gabapentin is an unusual pain medication in that it is rarely used by itself. On its own, gabapentin is not particularly effective in preventing pain, which is why it's frequently used in combination with other drugs. I honestly can't answer why Galliprant is so much more expensive, but if this combination works, I would stick with it. I hope this helps!
