Can I give my dog Rimadyl after he had Claro for ear infection?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. Oral medications (ie: antibiotics) do not work well for ear infections. Any medication to treat an ear infection should be used topically (inside the ear). Oral pain medication would probably be helpful but you would need to get those from your vet. In my opinion, if the ear is that painful you really should take him to your vet now for an examination so they can use the scope to look into the ear and also test the ear discharge to see what the infection is composed of (bacteria or yeast or both). They will also be able to see if the ear drum is intact. Some medications are contraindicated if the ear drum is ruptured. Cyclobenzaprine is NOT recommended for use in dogs. It has a very narrow margin of safety in dogs (and cats) and can cause significant central nervous system (CNS) and cardiovascular (CV) adverse effects. You should NOT use it. If you want to try to treat the ear at home, which I do not recommend, you can use this specific over the counter ear medication linked below. It is once a day and you do not have to clean the ear out first. It contains an anti-inflammatory (hydrocortisone) that should help with inflammation/pain. It is a small bottle so you will likely need at least 2 (if not 3) to do a full course of treatment. You must be sure to get the medication all the way down into the ear canal or it will not help much. If you chose to do this and there is no improvement in 4-5 days then you must take him to your vet for an exam. If he does seem to be improving then continue once daily for at least 14 days. You should see improvement on the Claro within 24-48 hours of use, but it may take at least 10 days before the ear infection is fully resolved. I hope this helps.

Yes there are no drug interactions listed between these drugs. Tramadol is an opioid used for mild to moderate pain and Rimadyl is an NSAID, a different class of pain medication which works through reducing inflammation. These two can be given together. Metronidazole and clavamox are two antibiotics which hit different kinds of bacteria, and are usually given together if there is a severe infection .All of these can be given together,

There are no contraindications for giving Rimadly when a dog has had acepromazine, so it's fine to to give Denzel Washington. As long as the vet prescribed the Rimadyl for him to take for his chipped nail, you can give it to him :-)

I am not aware for a formulation of that particular medication that is made to go in the ear. I would double check with her veterinarian on Monday, but in the meantime do not apply it to the ear. Clavamox will clear-up some infections, but not all and is usually given in more severe cases of ear infections. Ear infections usually have a primary cause that allows it to be infected and allergies are a common primary cause. If your vet recently evaluated him, then I would assume they would have noticed this and it would be worth giving your vet a call to see if this was a consideration when they prescribed the clavamox. Otherwise, the vet would need to evaluate him again to determine what the problem is and the necessary treatment. I hope that helps and he gets better soon.
