My dog accidentally got a double carprofen dose. Is she okay?

Accidents happen! Fortunately, the carprofen won't impact her heart disease or interact with the pimobendan. However, there is a chance that she could experience some stomach upset with vomiting and/or diarrhea, particularly since this is a pretty big dose for a dog her size. With this kind of dose, the worst case I'd expect to see could be ulceration of the GI tract. Normally, carprofen is prescribed at a dose of 4.4 mg/kg over 24 hours. Today, your dog consumed 7.86 mg/kg. In most cases, we don't see toxicity impacting the kidneys until a dose of 40 mg/kg is ingested. With all of that in mind, your dog should be absolutely fine! In order to be extra cautious, I'd recommend feeding her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days, then gradually mix it in with her normal food over 5-7 days. You can also call your vet to see if they can give a dose for an antacid, like Pepcid. (It's illegal for me to do so without having examined your dog.) If you see any vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or blood in the stool, you should call your vet right away. I hope that everything goes well!

The typical dose of Carprofen is 2mg/lb once daily, so you did not overdose her, but gave her the full days dose in a few hours. If you are sure that only Bella got into the Carprofen, she should be ok. The amount she took is right around the recommended dose for a dog her size, and it's not a massive overdose. If you think the puppy did get them, you need to take the puppy into a vet right away. I hope this helps!

In an otherwise healthy dog, the toxic dose of carprofen is 20 mg/kg as a single dose. So if your girl got 1/2 of the tablet (37.5 mg) each day, we would not expect this to cause toxicity issues unless she weighs less than 4 pounds. Carprofen overdoses normally cause GI problems like vomiting and stomach ulcers, or kidney failure at very high doses - loss of function in the rear legs would not be an expect symptom of this, so it's likely that she has a back problem causing this rather than a reaction to the carprofen. Rear leg paralysis can be very serious, especially if she has no movement or sensation at all in her back legs, so it would be best to take her to an emergency clinic tonight rather than waiting until morning if you can. Depending on the severity of the problem, some dogs may need emergency surgery to restore function.

Leave out the next dose and Jane should be ok as Carprofen (the active ingredient of Rovera) can be given in a double dose once daily or one dose every 12 hours. Watch her poop for the next teo or three days, if it is black, stop the Rovera and consult your veterinarian. Should Jane get lethargic, start to vomit or get diarrhea, you should also take her to your vet for an exam and blood work.

Dosage of Carprofen for a dog his size is about half of that, which means most chances it won't have a huge effect on him if he only had one pill of 75mg but do watch him for signs such as vomiting, lack of appetite and blood in the stools. if you notice any of those- take him to your vet immediately.

Hi there. So if I'm understanding correctly, it sounds like she just had one extra dose of Rimadyl at 2:30 am Thursday morning - is that right? While it's true that we always want to stick to the label dosage with this medication, as there is a risk of causing serious side effect issues with higher doses and/or giving it more frequently than prescribed, I would generally not expect to see any major issues with just one accidental "extra" dose. Most of the toxicity issues we see with this medication are related to dogs getting into the bottle and eating a large number of pills at once, or with chronic overdosing over a longer period of time. If your girl is acting normal, eating and drinking fine, and not vomiting, then I don't see any major cause for concern right now. I would definitely recommend calling your regular vet to let them know about the extra dose and make sure they don't recommend doing anything different - but otherwise, I would just monitor her for any problems, and stick to the prescribed dosing schedule from here on out. The main things to watch for would be vomiting, or not eating - if you see either of those symptoms, I would let your vet know right away. If you feel like she's still somewhat painful in between Rimadyl doses, you could also ask your vet about getting her a different pain medication that would be safe to give along with the Rimadyl if she seems painful at night before her next scheduled dose, such as tramadol or gabapentin.
