My diabetic dog is peeing while asleep. How can I prevent this issue?

Hello. I believe I answered your previous question. The problem is not his pills, the problem is his diabetes is worsening and is not being controlled with the pills. You will need to go to your vet to discuss starting on insulin. Without insulin he will develop life-threatening diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The pills are fine. Please discuss insulin with your vet. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. This sounds like urinary incontinence and that it is not secondary to a UTI. This could be caused by urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI), but is less likely to occur in males and more in females. JD could have a back problem or other neurological condition leading to decreased urethral closure pressure. I would recommend a trial of a medication called PPA or DES and see if the trial helps reduce the urinary incontinence. If there is no improvement after the trial, I would recommend more diagnostics such as abdominal ultrasound, x-rays or CT scan with contrast. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. It could be that her insulin needs adjusting, and the diabetes is causing her to drink more and then pee in her bed. It could also be she has another medical issue, such as kidney disease, causing her to drink more and urinated in her bed. I would recommend taking her into the vet first thing in the morning for a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis to see what is causing her to drink, eat, and pee more.

It could actually be spay incontinence. Lack of estrogen may cause the urethral sphincter (a muscle used to control the exit of urine) to relax and release urine involuntarily. This can be treated with medication. I'd have Coco seen by a vet for this issue.

He is so cute! If you are finding that he is urinating while he is sleeping then this definitely could be incontinence. I would talk to your vet about trying Proin (aka phenylpropanolamine) to see if this helps. This helps to tighten the urethral sphincter to prevent incontinence. It is used most commonly on female dogs but I have had some success using it in males. If you are seeing puddles throughout the house, he could have a urinary tract infection. I would have your vet do a urinalysis on him to see if there is any bacteria present. Your vet will be able to prescribe him the proper antibiotics to help him feel better. I hope this helps!

This sounds quite frustrating for both you and Kira! It is possible that Kira could have something as simple as a urinary tract infection or even urinary incontinence. If she has been overall drinking and urinating larger volumes, there is a chance that she may have developed diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing's disease, etc. At this point, Kira should be examined by her vet and have some screening testing done to rule out underlying medical conditions (CBC, chemistry, urinalysis). If your vet suspects urinary incontinence after the preliminary diagnostics, they may discuss medications that can help control the urethral sphincter to prevent urine leakage.

Keep in mind that this may be unrelated to the crystals and can even be something like urinary incontinence. I would continue monitoring for signs of painful urination or bloody urine. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work.
