What caused my Dachshund's sudden immobility and hunched back?

Sadie may be having a bulging or ruptured disc issue in her back. She needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately because the sooner this issue is addressed the better chance she has for a full recovery. Disc disease is very painful and can result in paralysis if not treated. Depending on the severity of the disease Sadie may just need prescription medication and rest or if the condition is more severe she may need surgery for a full recovery. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have these prescribed by a veterinarian. I am so very sorry to hear about Koko. Without having examined him it is very difficult for us to give possible causes, and your vet is definitely the person to ask for this information. Possible conditions that could cause the symptoms you describe could include tumors in the brain, stroke, a herniated intervertebral disk compressing the spinal cord, trauma, a tumor bleeding into the abdomen causing severe anemia and weakness, just to name a few. I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Once they have a disc issue, Dachshunds are more prone to future issues. I would recommend confinement again, and a quick vet checkup. Often pain medications and rest will help them heal. Veterinary acupuncture is also a great alternative therapy to increase speed of healing and hind end weakness or paralysis.

I am very sorry you lost Snoopy today! It could be that he had a tumor causing his symptoms, that could have been located in his brain or along his spine. A tumor pressing on his brain would cause him to lose the ability to use his legs correctly and be unable to control his bowels. A tumor on his spine could cause the same symptoms. He also could have had an illness causing this to happen. You can take Snoopy's body into the vet to do a necropsy (an autopsy) on him to see what caused him to pass away. Dachshunds are notorious for hurting their backs due their conformation. They have very long backs compared to other breeds. This makes them more susceptible to injury. They will often walked hunched and scream when picked up. Usually these dogs need strong pain medications, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers.
