Why does my dachshund have recurring skin bumps? What helps?

These bumps could be from an allergic reaction, mites, fleas, or a skin infection. Because Benadryl hasn't helped and Kylo has had these bumps for a week, it's time to see the vet. Those spots on Brody could be several things including an allergic reaction (like hives), allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or skin mites (like scabies). Unfortunately, all these conditions look alike. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Allergic reactions are treated with steroids and antihistamines. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. I recommend to call your veterinarian and have Brody examined again. When pets don't respond as expected to treatment, it can mean that the real diagnosis has not been discovered. For skin health in general, there are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Brody wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Sometime we never know the inciting cause but insects or environmental allergens are the most common, unless he is receiving medications or was recently vaccinated (in the last 24 hours). The standard treatment for hives is benadryl and steroids. Ideally you should have him seen by your Vet. Hi, from your pictures it appears that Mackenzie Ray is having an allergic reaction to something. You may see hives, small bumps, all over her skin. If she is vomiting or having trouble breathing, she needs to see a vet immediately. You can try giving her some Benadryl to see if that resolves. I cannot give you a dose but you can look one up online. Also, a shampoo with steroid can give her some relief. It doesn't appear to be serious, but unfortunately it's not possible to tell from just the picture. I would have to take a sample of it and look under the microscope to tell for sure. However, this bump looks more related to inflammation rather than something serious like skin cancer. This could simply be a boil. One thing that would help determine whether the bump is harmful or not is the amount of time it's been there. If it has been there for over a month and is growing, then I would be more suspicious of a tumor or cyst. If it has only been there a week or two, then I would give it some more time. Make a salt water solution by adding a tsp. of salt to 2 cups of warm water.
