My Mini Dachshund has painful bumps on her back. What's wrong?

Hello, thank you for your question about Dallas. The bumps in the photos that you've provided look live hives which are usually indicative of an allergic reaction. Often times depending on the severity of the reaction dogs require more than one dose of Benadryl or other more aggressive medications. I would administer additional Benadryl to Dallas now. If this dose does not improve the hives or he develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or rapid breathing I would recommend having Dallas seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. I think its time for Skye to see the veterinarian. If the at home treatments aren't working after a few days or if things are getting worse, the doctor is needed as she has medications to clear the rash. Those spots on Skye's belly are all little bacterial infections. Puppies commonly them and they typically respond well to antibiotics. I hope this answers your questions!

It doesn't appear to be serious, but unfortunately it's not possible to tell from just the picture. I would have to take a sample of it and look under the microscope to tell for sure. However, this bump looks more related to inflammation rather than something serious like skin cancer. This could simply be a boil. One thing that would help determine whether the bump is harmful or not is the amount of time it's been there. If it has been there for over a month and is growing, then I would be more suspicious of a tumor or cyst. If it has only been there a week or two, then I would give it some more time. Make a salt water solution by adding a tsp. of salt to 2 cups of warm water. Soak a cloth in the water, then hold this over the bump for 15 minutes, while intermittently dipping the cloth in the warm water. Do this 3-4 times daily. I am sorry to hear about your dachsund! We worry with shivering and whimpering about pain. It can be difficult to determine where a dog is painful at home. One common cause of pain in a dachsund is neck or back pain. Unfortunately these guys are prone to getting herniated disks in their back, where the slipped disk presses on the spinal cord causing discomfort. In mild cases we just might see pain. In more severe cases we can see weakness or even paralysis of the legs. This is just one possible cause of pain, but it is a definite possibility in this breed. The lump in her armpit may be totally unrelated to her pain. We could have a soft tissue growth/tumor which could be benign, like a lipoma (fatty tumor), or a more aggressive tumor. It could be an enlarged lymph node, a cyst, or an abscess (pocket of infection). I would recommend an examination by your vet ASAP. If Chloe seems weak, disoriented, if her gums look pale in color, or she cannot rest/relax comfortably then an exam at the emergency vet may be wise because she could be in discomfort all night.

I am so sorry Pretty Girl is going through this. On her belly it looks like a little skin infection but on her side it looks like hives. This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Zoe regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.
