My dog looks like a Malinois. How can I confirm its true breed?

If it is, it is a mix. The ears are not erect and the muzzle appears to be too long and narrow. The body seems too long as well. It is difficult to determine with only an image. The definitive way to determine breed would be to have a canine DNA test done on him. You can submit a cheek swab or a blood sample.

Congratulations on your new puppy! While it's hard to know just by looking at her, I don't suspect Rottweiler in the background. German Shepherds carry the gene for black and tan (like a Rott does) but this gene is modified by another gene for the saddle marking. Cleo did not get the gene for a saddle and so the black and tan is expressed normally. The best way to know for sure what is in Cleo's back ground is with a genetic breed analysis. She looks like she could be 3-4 months old. Look at her teeth. At around 4 months of age she should start losing baby teeth. She may be a Malinois, but is difficult to determine by one image. A reputable breeder will provide paperwork, pedigree, vaccine history, etc. Your veterinarian should be able to make a determination of age and breed after a physical exam. She has to be examined anyway to get her vaccines.
