Will a cold or Zithromax affect my 4-week puppy's development?

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to give the dose information for any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Laila. Finally, the safety of using Azithromycin in nursing dogs has not been determined, so I would not recommend using it in her. It is never say to try to treat your dog yourself, as you could accidentally give a medication that is harmful to her or inappropriate to use. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If your puppy is not improving after being on medications for a week or is worsening, I would schedule a recheck with your vet. Sometimes switching to a different antibiotic may help. The particular antibiotic that your puppy is on may also cause growth defects, but this is rarely seen. I typically use Clavamox or doxycycline for Respiratory bugs in puppies. Another alternative treatment your vet might consider, is initiating nebulization therapy to help relieve some of the symptoms your puppy is experiencing. I have used it to speed up the regression of viral papillomas. The medication is once daily and should be given with food. I would give her no more than 0.50 mls once daily. I hope this helps!

From the pictures, it looks like there is nasal discharge, but I can't tell if it is clear or yellow/white. Many times a cold or upper respiratory tract infection is viral and just needs to run its coarse. You can support him by using a humidifier or being in a bathroom with a steamy shower for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times per day. This will help break up the mucous. If the discharge has a yellow or green color, this may indicate a bacterial infection and he would need antibiotics to get over it, so you you should see the vet. There are other potential causes for the symptoms you have mentioned, including distemper virus and possibly others based on your location in India. If Shadow does not seem interested in food, won't drink water, or is lethargic, he should see a vet as soon as possible. I am sorry that Shadow's mom died. At around 4 weeks old, the mom starts to wean the puppies off. If he has not already been eating puppy food, I would recommend getting wet puppy food that you can mix with puppy milk replacer for the next week. If he eats it well, you can transition him to dry puppy food with water or milk added the next week, and then after that he should be ok on just dry puppy food. During this whole time always keep a bowl of fresh clean water available.

Most upper respiratory infections from the shelter are viral, but young newly adopted dogs are at greater risk for secondary bacterial infections Which is why they often get put on antibiotics. However, many otherwise healthy adult dogs will recover quickly without any antibiotics. I Ted to treat it like you would a cold in yourself. Fluids, Rest, and a little time as long as appetite is normal and acting fine otherwise . NO! Do not give any Azithromycin. That will not help this problem. The only thing that helps a hoarse voice to rest it so if you can, try to keep him from barking. It is not life threatening. My guess is that he may have a touch of kennel cough and it will usually resolves within 10-14 days. If it does not, or if he starts showing other symptoms (vomiting, not eating, lethargy, nasal discharge) then I would get him to a vet for an exam. I hope this helps! Best wishes!
