Are blue Staffies more prone to skin issues or other health problems?

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 25 lbs

I am about to purchase a Staffordshire Bull Terrier having noticed that most of the puppies are of a blue colour I have read that this increases the possibility of skin conditions due to breeding blue to blue dogs is this true? And if so is any other colour Staffordshire bull terrier prone to increased health issues opposed to other colours? My brother-in-law has had add a pure white Staffordshire bull terrier which which is unfortunately death

Blue colored Staffordshire Bull Terriers can be more prone to skin issues but many seem to be completely normal. It is a newer color however so the full effects of the genetics is not known at this time. There are some breeds like the Doberman who have known genetic problems with the blue color. Any dog with this condition can have issues with Dilution Alopecia however.
I recommend to discuss with the breeder your concerns and ask for references for people who have purchased once of his blue puppies. Also, thoroughly examine the parents or ask to view a vet report so you can check for skin problems. You may also ask to have the puppy examined by the veterinarian prior to purchasing.

My Yorkie puppy has blue skin on his back. Is this a health concern?

Hi, Yorkies can tend to have pigmented areas of skin. As long as the gums and mucous membranes are pink, moist, and if you press on the gum and it goes from white back to pink within 2 seconds (Capillary Refill Time), all of those are normal indicators of proper oxygenation. It is good you noted this because it is true, that when areas of the body do not get properly oxygenated, they turn blue. Although if the gums are pink, skin seems normal beside the pigment and Hugo is acting like a normal, healthy Yorkie, the skin color should not be of concern. Hope this was helpful! -Dr. Gordon

Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is very hard to say whether or not Bluey has a skin infection. The picture is a bit blurry and it is hard to see what is going on. In order to diagnosis a skin condition in Bluey, he will need to have a few simple skin tests performed by his veterinarian. Mite infection, fungal infection, or bacterial infection are all possibilities. This needs to be confirmed with an exam and a few simple skin tests. Best wishes to you and Bluey!

My healthy cat has blue skin. Is this a normal color or a problem?

Hello, frequently, it may be apparent that cants and sometimes dogs may have a pale or even bluish skin. It is not generally associated with any diseases, diet, or hairballs. This may actually be associated with blood supply to and from his skin. After blood is delivered to any organ, it releases oxygen and blood becomes darker in color, a blue color. This may be the reason why Kane's skin appears more blue. Alternatively, his dark coat may also be giving his skin this color appearance. As long as Kane is otherwise doing ok, he likely does not have anything abnormal going on with him. Monitor for any scratching, hair loss, weight loss, dry coat, and if you note any of these, then have him evaluated. Home his helps and best of luck.

My new puppy and Lab Blue Heeler mix: What health issues to watch for?

Oh my goodness, what cuties! Congratulations! While there are certainly problems that we know that are more common in certain breeds, we know less about whether or not mixes that are from those breeds are as likely to have these issues, or not. Certainly chihuahuas are prone to "small dog problems", such as luxating patellas (laxity in the kneecap) and dental disease are common, and in dachshunds back disease is a big problem, so these would be the first things I would worry about and want to do what's necessary to prevent. Tooth brushing and good weight management are key in these issues. Blue Heelers are hearty dogs and don't have a lot of hereditary problems but be careful with overfeeding because they are predisposed to obesity. Enjoy your new pets!

My black dog's bald spots are growing. Is it genetic hair loss?

It looks like Rainy may have color dilution alopecia, which is common in "blue" or diluted colored dogs. There is not much that can be done to prevent or halt the hair loss. I try to rule out other causes of alopecia, including allergies, fleas, mites, and malnutrition, first. Why is my Staffy's fur getting worse on wheat-free dog food?

At first glance this looks like mange (skin mites) or a flea allergy however, there are numerous issues that can cause hair loss in dogs. This does not look like a typical food allergy reaction and actually, food allergies are not that common despite what pet food companies would like you to believe. I think you need to take him to a vet for an exam and some testing. They can tell you more after seeing him in person and getting more history from you.
