Why is my Staffy's fur getting worse on wheat-free dog food?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 30 lbs

I have recently got a Staffordshire Terrier, I was told he had some form of wheat deficiency by his previous owners but I have been feeding him food that is wheat free and his fur seems to be getting even worse, is there anything you recommend that we feed him as an alternative? And what the actual issue may be?

At first glance this looks like mange (skin mites) or a flea allergy however, there are numerous issues that can cause hair loss in dogs.

This does not look like a typical food allergy reaction and actually, food allergies are not that common despite what pet food companies would like you to believe. I think you need to take him to a vet for an exam and some testing. They can tell you more after seeing him in person and getting more history from you.
