My dog's skin looks blue after a bath. Is this normal for dogs?

Sometimes the skin may look like that as a saliva stain due to self-licking which may be due to allergies for examples. If he is not presenting any symptoms, I would not be too concerned about this. Hello, frequently, it may be apparent that cants and sometimes dogs may have a pale or even bluish skin. It is not generally associated with any diseases, diet, or hairballs. This may actually be associated with blood supply to and from his skin. After blood is delivered to any organ, it releases oxygen and blood becomes darker in color, a blue color. This may be the reason why Kane's skin appears more blue. Alternatively, his dark coat may also be giving his skin this color appearance. As long as Kane is otherwise doing ok, he likely does not have anything abnormal going on with him. Monitor for any scratching, hair loss, weight loss, dry coat, and if you note any of these, then have him evaluated. Home his helps and best of luck.

It isn't abnormal for the puppy pink skin to darkened in these area to a uniform greyish brown color. the skin should still be soft and not "elephant" like which indicates excessive licking. Hi, Yorkies can tend to have pigmented areas of skin. As long as the gums and mucous membranes are pink, moist, and if you press on the gum and it goes from white back to pink within 2 seconds (Capillary Refill Time), all of those are normal indicators of proper oxygenation. It is good you noted this because it is true, that when areas of the body do not get properly oxygenated, they turn blue. Although if the gums are pink, skin seems normal beside the pigment and Hugo is acting like a normal, healthy Yorkie, the skin color should not be of concern. Hope this was helpful! -Dr. Gordon

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Many dogs normally have darker pigmented areas of skin under their fur. In some dogs, this does pigment can increase with age. It is impossible to tell only from a photograph however if this is normal pigment. She would need to be assessed by a veterinarian with a physical exam to determine if there is cause for concern.

If you are seeing other signs like scabs, pimple-like rash, increased drinking and urinating, or increased appetite, see your vet as these could be a sign of other conditions.
