What's the best month to start flea and tick prevention for dogs?

I would recommend starting Flea and tick prevention now. If you use a collar I would recommend the Seresto collar. If you didn't want the collar than using a pill is typically the best for dogs. I don't see a lot of fleas and/or ticks when people use those products instead of topical. You can use Bravecto, Nexguard or Simparica. I recommend oral flea & tick preventatives. There are several brands, and all are effective: Nexgard, Simparica, and Credelio are monthly, or Bravecto which is given every 12 weeks. My top two are Nexgard and Bravecto. These are prescription products available from your veterinarian. Hope this helps!

Great question - I am also in MN so get this question a lot :-) I absolutely recommend tick prevention until it is consistently frozen day and night, and we are past the intermittent fall warm-ups. Ticks are amazingly hardy, and they actually pick up in the fall, so definitely keep Teddy's prevention current to avoid the Lyme disease risk. I generally recommend people continue that into December. You can probably get away with skipping Jan/Feb if it stays predictably cold, but ticks were back again last March so we want to stay ahead of them. However - fleas are something they could pick up year round if they are exposed to another affected animal, and mice tend to find their way inside more in the fall/winter and could pass fleas along. So, if you feel Teddy's risk level is low, I think overall the risk is lowest in Jan/Feb, but the safest option would still be to continue year-round. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can't combine the other orals with the one you gave. Personally I would just wait the 2 weeks. You can use the Seresto collar but that lasts for 8 months so I see not point then of using a new product. All the topical medications last 1 month. It would just save you money to wait and check him over well for ticks. I like Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica for the oral flea and tick and the Seresto collar. I wish you the best!

You can just go and buy tick and flea treatment for your dog. Make sure it is the right size for his weight. You should think about heart worm treatment also. This will require a heart worm test to make sure he does not have heart worm and then the vet can prescribe the heart worm prevention. Here are some reputable flea and tick medications: Spot-ons: Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, in tablet form for dogs Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well)

Nexgard is an excellent product that provide tick protection in addition to flea prevention. Bravecto is a similar product, but it provides coverage against fleas and ticks for 3 months. All of these medications require a prescription. I would recommend discussing them with your vet to determine the best fit for Charlie.
