Is beef liver safe for my dog with pancreatitis on a low-fat diet?

Hello again! Yes you can potentially feed this much, but she doesn't need it daily. It's a treat, and treats should never be given daily or they no longer are treats. In addition, too much liver can lead to an overdose of vitamin A, which in turn leads to bone deformity, bone spurs, digestive problems, muscle weakness, weight loss, and stiffness. It's better to limit it to three times a week.

Hi there. So sorry that Archie is having this issue. In all honesty, it is best to put him on prescription low fat diet as that is exactly what he needs. Pancreatitis is very serious. With each bout of pancreatitis the pancreas sustains more damage and can no longer work properly. Many dogs will end up with diabetes, cancer or severe digestive issues. You are FAR better off with the prescription diet instead of you guessing what to feed him. Talk to your vet about one of the prescription diets like Hill's i/d low fat (it comes in cans and dry food). Boiled chicken and rice is not bad but it is not a balanced diet. You are correct, the fat content should be between 6 and 10%. I would be shocked if you found that low of a fat percentage in any over the counter diet. Again, prescription diet is the way to go. Yes, this is a great food to give a dog with pancreatitis. It is actually my first choice. I would recommend doing small meals every 4-6 hours and see if your dog can keep that down. If you're feeding the canned food do about 3 tablespoons to start and then slowly increase the amount you are giving him until he is recovered. If you're feeding the dry food do it in half cup increments and then slowly increase the amount you are giving him if he is able to keep it down. There are several excellent diets for liver disease in the market from Hills, Purina and Royal canin, among others. It should not matter if canned or dry. I would just choose whatever Tanner prefers. Processed food like canned liver should be avoided in dogs. It can have a high salt content and be very fatty which can cause gastrointestinal problems. It is best to go slow with feedings after a bout of pancreatitis. I suggest you continue with the 12 tablespoons and then speak to your vet tomorrow about how you should proceed. She won't starve, I promise!

The current recall has been confined to a specific range of the hills canned/wet diets and if she has been doing well on the active longevity kibble with no flare ups of pancreatitis I would be very slow to consider changing as this may trigger relapses which may be more difficult to control as she is getting older. A very low fat and restricted diet is recommended in pancreatitis patients, this is difficult to prepare accurately at home over the long term to maintain a correctly balanced diet. My preferred choice in such patients is royal canin gastrointestinal low fat or calibra gastro-pancreas but many light and senior diets are also ok in stable cases
