My dog has pancreatitis. Is her Hill's food safe after the recall?

Honestly, with pancreatitis a dog needs a super low fat diet and the only ones that fulfill this are prescription diets. I would recommend canned and dry Hill's i/d low fat. If this was his first bout of pancreatitis he may only need to be on this for a short while. If he has had multiple bouts of pancreatitis then he needs the super low fat diet for life. Continue this diet until your one pet is over their pancreatitis episode. Then you can slowly transition them back to a senior diet which is typically lower in calories and higher in protein and carbs. My top brands are Royal Canin, Hill’s Science Diet, Evo or Eukanuba. Hi there. If you just need something to give her for a short time (up to a week or two), you could feed her plain boiled chicken and rice - this is bland and very low in fat, and shouldn't upset her stomach while you're waiting to be able to get her prescription diet again.

There is no best answer to your question! Diabetic dogs often do well on diets low in carbohydrates and high in fiber as this will help to regulate their blood glucose throughout the day. The Wellness senior is not quite as high in fiber as w/d. These diets are similar in fat content, which can play a role in pancreatitis. I would try feeding the Wellness senior diet and nothing else for 1 week and recheck with your vet. Signs that this is an appropriate diet for Snickers would be that he has no vomiting or diarrhea, eats it well, and his blood glucose curve is stable at his current dose of insulin. It is important to check glucose curves after starting a different diet since it may change his insulin needs.

Poor Henry-pancreatitis is no fun. I don’t usually recommend adding something like this to the diet for animals who suffer these types of severe/chronic conditions. We never know what may cause a flair up. However, if Henry is using a prescription kibble you could check with your vet to see if a canned formulation is available as well. If so you can cut the canned product into little cubes and bake/dehydrate then in the oven to make your own treats! Another option is that most of the companies that manufacture prescription foods also have a range of treats which are labelled for use with various of their prescription diets. Good luck!

I have no experience with Protease IFC, and I would recommend discussing it's use with the vet that diagnosed Sofia with pancreatitis. Zylkene and probiotics are fine - if you break open the Zylkene capsule, it can be sprinkled on food and may make it taste better. Personally, I am not a fan of raw diets, but at this point, it is most important to find an easily digestible, low fat food that Sofia is interested in eating. Prescription options like Hill's i/d are available through your vet. Otherwise boiled chicken breast, cooked white rice, plain toast, chicken broth, or fish broth are reasonable options.

Poor Quinton! Pancreatitis can become a chronic issue. Switching the diet to the Low Fat food may help. You will also need to make sure he does not eat ANY human food or get into the garbage. Any treats need to be extremely low fat. Some dogs with chronic pancreatitis benefit from daily antioxidants for dogs. Some may need a daily steroid but most don't. Make sure Quinton drinks lots of water daily.
