Why does yogurt help my senior cat's recurring nausea and vomiting?

I would recommend using a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora. I have used this product many times and have not seen many cases that vomited from this probiotic. I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Laundry. There are a number of anti-nausea medications that can be helpful for Laundry. And if your veterinarian has not recently checked his blood work (including a thyroid level) and blood pressure, I would certainly recheck those values to make sure that they are normal. Then, you can discuss the best anti-nausea medication with your veterinarian to help Laundry feel better. There's no evidence at all that these kind of supplements work, but if it does help with one of your cat's issues with vomiting, it's no harm to keep using it. Probiotics I only recommend when an animal is ill, such as with intestinal issues.

You can change her food to a hypoallergenic or sensitive stomach formula such as science diet I/D. These are very bland and easy to digest. You can also get probiotics for cats to add to the food to help Sometimes vomiting can be from an infection, cancer or inflammatory bowel. Your vet can start testing for these thing if the above doesn’t help

Since she is still having some intermittent vomiting episodes, there are some other things that you could consider trying. First, a daily probiotic like Forti-Flora can be very helpful for some cats with chronic vomiting problems - this is very safe and does not have any risks or side effects, so it's a good option to try first. If this doesn't help, I would recommend talking to your vet about whether prescription medication may be helpful for Darcy. Anti-nausea medications like Cerenia, and oral steroids like prednisone are both potentially good options that can be given daily if needed to help prevent vomiting episodes.

It is not normal for a cat to vomit that frequently, so your cat may have inflammatory bowel disease or another type of chronic gastrointestinal disease. Since it has been going on for so, a diet change may not be enough at this point. The ideal situation would be to have your veterinarian do some testing to determine what is causing the vomiting. Yes, that could be the problem for sure. If that is the case though, the diarrhea should be self-limiting meaning that it will go away on it's own without treatment. If it does not go away, then you should get them to your vet for an exam. Despite what people believe, giving yogurt (or any dairy products) to cats is not recommended. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
