My senior cat is vomiting frequently and won't eat. What should I do?

It is not normal for a cat to vomit that frequently, so your cat may have inflammatory bowel disease or another type of chronic gastrointestinal disease. Since it has been going on for so, a diet change may not be enough at this point. The ideal situation would be to have your veterinarian do some testing to determine what is causing the vomiting. If that is not an option, then I would discuss treatment options with your veterinarian. There are a number of medications that may be able to resolve the vomiting. Good luck! I am sorry to hear your cat is not feeling well. If this medication was prescribed by your veterinarian and your cat is still vomiting despite the medication then I would seek veterinary care immediately. If the medication was NOT prescribed by your veterinarian then please do not give any more, and take your cat in for evaluation. You do not mention how old the kitty is-any number of issues could be going on. A foreign body obstruction in the intestinal tract, a gastrointestinal infection, dietary indiscretion, a cancerous process, even renal failure can cause the symptoms you have noted. Your cat needs a thorough physical exam and your vet May recommend some diagnostics such as xrays and bloodwork. I hope your kitty feels better soon.

If Willow did not have her blood tested when she was in for her exam I would highly recommend having the vet pull a blood sample and check to see if she has any abnormal values. Kidney disease is something we quite commonly see in older cats and this certainly could be the cause of the vomiting / decreased appetite. Episodes of acute vomiting like these can be related to pancreatitis, bile ducts and gall bladder infection, gastritis, food indiscretion and more. It would be worth to do a blood test to check Louie's pancreas and liver function. If the test for pancreas is positive, Louie's would definitely benefit from low fat diet.

Persistent vomiting and refusal to eat is concerning, especially in an elderly pet where they may be weight loss or dehydration. Given the clear blood work i would be concerned about a possible obstruction, hairballs, tumours or a twisted bowel are all possible. Xrays may be recommended as well as tube feeding to maintain calorie intake until a diagnosis has been reached

Hello, thank you for your question about Pete. I am sorry to hear that he is not feeling well. Inappetance and vomiting can be signs of many underlying conditions. I would agree that Pete should be seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine him and discuss the need for additional diagnostics, such as systemic bloodwork. If Pete becomes extremely stressed prior to his appointment, you could discuss administering a sedative/anti-anxiety medication prior to his visit with your veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. It sounds like your kitty is very ill. I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic (or his regular clinic tomorrow if an emergency clinic is not possible) for an exam and labwork. This could be something treatable (or at least manageable, if not curable) or it may not be. I would be worried about kidney disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, cancer, and liver disease - it could definitely be other things too, but these are at the top of my list.
