My senior cat is throwing up. How can I help her at home affordably?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

My 12 year old Calico cat has been throwing up very frequently and I don’t know why. I know it says I should go to a clinic if she is throwing up for no reason, but I just can’t afford that. I was hoping I could get some help in home remedies that could make my cat feel better and stop puking.

You can change her food to a hypoallergenic or sensitive stomach formula such as science diet I/D. These are very bland and easy to digest. You can also get probiotics for cats to add to the food to help

Sometimes vomiting can be from an infection, cancer or inflammatory bowel. Your vet can start testing for these thing if the above doesn’t help

Unfortunately, those are all very vague symptoms and signs that Tia is not feeling well and needs medical care. Vomiting and refusing to eat are very serious concerns in a cat, and can be caused by a wide range of things such as illness, viral diseases, parasites, infections and more, and needs a vet exam to narrow down the causes and find the correct treatment. You can try to encourage eating by making her food smelly by warming it up or adding a little low-sodium broth, however if she is not able to keep anything down or is completely acting ill, she needs care ASAP.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. With gastrointestinal disease, sometimes the intestines are just unable to absorb nutrients regardless of the type of food you feed. So, it is important to feed Elvis whatever he will eat. There are no natural remedies, as there is no quick medical fixes, either. Oral steroids often help for a while, but then other medications are often needed. You can try some of the cat foods labeled as sensitive stomach or sensitive skin. The best ones are made by Science Diet & Royal Canin. I would also try him on a good probiotic, like Purina's FortiFlora. It really does seem to help some of these cats with GI issues. I hope this helps Elvis with his weight loss & vomiting.

My senior cat is vomiting daily and losing weight. Is she dying?

I'm sorry this is going on with Precious but she needs to see a vet. The most common issues we see with older cats are: 1. diabetes 2. kidney disease/failure 3. hyperthyroidism Any of those can cause her symptoms and all are treatable (to an extent). All can be ruled out with simple blood testing. The best one she could have is hyperthyroidism - it is not expensive to diagnose or treat. Of course it may not be any of those and she could have something else going on entirely. First step is you need to know what the diagnosis is. I don't know what prices are in your area but an exam and bloodwork is probably right around $200. All you can do is call around for prices and see what you can work out. Some humane societies these days have low cost services so maybe check with them.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Laundry. There are a number of anti-nausea medications that can be helpful for Laundry. And if your veterinarian has not recently checked his blood work (including a thyroid level) and blood pressure, I would certainly recheck those values to make sure that they are normal. Then, you can discuss the best anti-nausea medication with your veterinarian to help Laundry feel better. They will not want to do a teeth cleaning on him if he is not feeling well, so be sure to have them evaluate Laundry and solve this problem first. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. My 13-year-old cat has chronic diarrhea and vomiting. What's wrong?

Chronic diarrhea in an older cat with vomiting can be a sign of an inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal cancer. The only way to differentiate between the two disease is a surgery to take biopsies of the intestines and have them analyzed. Based on the diagnosis, the diet may be changed or vitamin supplements or steroids may be added to manage her symptoms. They will check for parasite and check her labs for any renal or endocrine disease

My 16-year-old cat has a runny tummy. What food should I try?

You can find a feline probiotic to add to her diet or try a sensitive stomach formula food or a prescription such as Science Diet I/D. If this does not improve the stool she may need to see a vet. Older cats can get an inflammatory bowel disease and stress can definitely make it worse. It will take some vitamin supplements and daily medication but usually improves by then. If not then they will look into further testing such as an ultrasound or a biopsy.
