Are Vicks VapoPads with camphor in a humidifier safe for my cat?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 years and 1 month old | 12 lbs

Tonight at the store I bought Vick’s VapoPads and Kaz Inhalant for my severe sinus problems. I have a cat and was worried about it being harmful to him. I looked online n saw that Camphor is toxic to cats if put on their skin, which both products do contain Camphor. It is used in my hudmifer and gets put into the air as I sleep. I live with my parents who have two cats and he’s cat aggressive so having him leave the room is totally out of question. My room is huge and it’s a small humidifier.

Thank you for using pet coach. I would not be concerned about using a small amount in a small humidifier being toxic to Junior. However I would not recommend applying it to his skin or even applying it to your skin if he is going to be licking that area. I would limit the use of the humidifier to be on the safe side. Eucalyptus oil, which is an ingredient in the Vicks, is toxic to cats so it's not safe to use around Polly. You can use the humidifier to release steam only, and that's just fine for her. My cat got Vicks VapoRub on its nose. Is camphor or menthol harmful?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm not terribly worried about the effects of the Vicks. However, I imagine the smell would be overwhelming for a creature with a much more powerful nose than we have. That being said, watch Minkay closely and if you see vomiting, diarrhea, heavy breathing, coughing, etc. please see you vet. Side note, Vicks probably will not work for sneezing and if Minkay is sneezing that badly, he needs to see a vet for testing if needed and/or for medication that will be more effective. Which essential oils are safe to use in a humidifier near my cat?

Tea tree oil is toxic to cats, and I would not use it at all in your home, as there is a chance Poe could lick the oils and become very sick. Lavender is also toxic, as are citrus oils (orange) and eucalyptus. Peppermint and lemongrass are the only safe ones you have to use around Poe, and I would restrict your use to those essential oils only. You can also use cedar wood and rosemary.

My cat has a runny nose. Is Vicks VapoRub safe to use on them?

No I would definitely NOT use Vick’s vapo rub for your kitty. I Wouldn’t use any ointment or medication for a runny nose in a cat. If midnight is having some nasal congestion and clear nasal discharge I would just clean around his nose with a warm wash cloth and humidify the air around him by placing him in the bathroom while showering (the steam may help) or by using a humidifier. If the discharge is becoming or yellow or green I would have him seen by a veterinarian. He may need medication for a secondary bacterial infection. Hope midnight is feeling much better soon!

Are essential oil diffusers or humidifiers safe for my pets?

Hello, there is no problem using the humidifier/diffuser as long as the room in which you are using this is not closed. There should always be a source of fresh air into the room, so cracking a window is a very good idea, even for you. Otherwise, just make sure there is some air exchange going on in the room. Is it safe to use essential oils on an air filter near my cat?

In most cases, if it is a tiny amount going into the air it isn't problematic, the main concern is if your cat is getting the oils onto their fur and licking it off, or directly inhaling the diffuser.
