Which essential oils are safe to use in a humidifier near my cat?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 15 lbs

My cat was sniffing a humidifier that I used tea tree and lemongrass essential oils in, so I shut it off when he was near it, just in case. Would a few drops of essential oil in a humidifier be harmful to him? Specifically, lemongrass, tea tree, peppermint, orange, eucalyptus, or lavender. The bottles say they're 100% essential oils, and I used about 4 drops in about 1 cup of water. Thanks!

Tea tree oil is toxic to cats, and I would not use it at all in your home, as there is a chance Poe could lick the oils and become very sick. Lavender is also toxic, as are citrus oils (orange) and eucalyptus. Peppermint and lemongrass are the only safe ones you have to use around Poe, and I would restrict your use to those essential oils only. You can also use cedar wood and rosemary.

Lavender, orange (can extend to blood orange), and peppermint are all toxic to cats so I would not use them at all. Cats have a much more sensitive sense of smell than humans, and even the smell of these can be very irritating. I don't ever recommend using any essential oils around cats due to the risks, and I would see if you can make the candle tarts in a place away from your cat. I hope this helps!

Are Vicks humidifier pads or lavender essential oil safe for cats?

Eucalyptus oil, which is an ingredient in the Vicks, is toxic to cats so it's not safe to use around Polly. You can use the humidifier to release steam only, and that's just fine for her. Peppermint essential oil is toxic to dogs, so do not use that. As for lavender, while it isn't toxic, dogs can have negative or allergic reactions to it, so use only small amounts initially. If you have a cat, do not use any essential oils as many are highly toxic to cats. I hope this helps!

Can I safely diffuse chamomile essential oil around my cat at home?

It’s probably safe to diffuse it for most cats. However, if Tigger has any history of asthma or breathing condition, I do not recommend diffusing anything (or incense or candles or smoking indoors for that matter). Also keep in mind that some essential oils can smell extremely strong to our pets - who have a much better sense of smell. If it smells strong to you, it’s overwhelming to Tigger- so turn it down. I used essential oils before cats. Will past use harm my new cats?

While direct contact with undiluted essential oils can be toxic to cats using a few drops in a spray or diffuser is unlikely to cause any problems. If your cats have asthma you may want to avoid any fragrances but otherwise I think you can continue to use your oils this way. Ask your veterinarian for advice if your cats have any health problems.
