How much to feed my two 5-month Sphynx kittens if one overeats?

Congratulations on adding the two kittens to your family!!! I always say two kittens are better than one as they play with each other so well! I generally do not limit the food on kittens this age. It is important to remember that they are forming their eating habits now so offering both canned and dry is a good thing. Certainly they are showing a preference but in general, you don't want them to become picky. I would split one small can of kitten food between both kittens at this time. I would leave the dry food out at all times for them to munch on through out the day. Make sure to be offering a high quality kitten dry food. In general, kittens don't struggle with their weight but if you notice they are starting to get heavy, then you will need to moderate food. At this age, the kittens likely eat about 1/2-3/4 cup of food per kitten per day. This will decrease when they become adults (kittens are growing so they eat more). I would try to teach everyone to meal feed. this would mean you place everyone’s food bowl down at the same time for 30 minutes. I would put them if different areas of the house if possible. Once that time is up, the food gets picked up. If you have to add canned food to the smaller cats’ food to help entice them to eat and prevent weight loss, that’s ok. This would also allow you to feed Clover a set amount and prevent obesity. Unfortunately, this is the best solution. There isn’t a great way to prevent him from eating too much when it is always available. You can also encourage him to increase his activity by making him play more. I hope this helps.

Yes, there is a low calorie food that is formulated for growth, it is made by Royal Canin and is called Kitten spay/neuter. This food will allow Tasha to continue growing but not have as many calories. You may also institute feeding her less amounts but more frequently like 1/8 of a cup four times a day. In the wild cats eat 9 to 16 times a day so their metabolism is geared to run constantly. Make sure to keep her active with lots of play. Best of luck.

This can be a variety of dry and wet food and should not exceed more than 1 cup of dry food per day or more than 1 can per day. I can understand your dilemma here. You can try offering her 1/4 cup 3 times a day and see if his curbs her hunger. The food recommendations on the bag are more like guidelines. I would also recommend weaning her off the milk over the next week, because she is old enough where she doesn’t need it after 6 weeks of age. Some cats are food obsessed with food. If Bear is growing normally, is not under weight and is eating the appropriate amount, he is likely having his caloric needs met. One thing you may want to do is have him tested/treated for worms and other internal parasites just to be certain they are not stealing his nutrients and making him hungrier. Feeding multiple cats can be stressful unfortunately. And if you have a cat who is obsessed or prone to being over weight, it can be even worse. You may need to always feed them separately. You can also look into one of the automatic feeders that reads the pet's microchips. Unfortunately, there is not easy solution here. For kittens, my top food choices are Royal Canin and Purina ProPlan. Make sure to feed the kitten formula. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I have a couple of suggestions for you. First, one of my friends used a latch to create an opening in their laundry room door that only the skinny cat could fit through. They left food in there for the skinnier cat to free feed throughout the day and meal fed the heavier cat. Second, if your skinnier cat will eat from food balls or no-bowl feeders, I would feed all meals in that way. Third, I would only feed twice the amount of food that the heavier cats needs twice daily. That way the skinnier cat has enough to eat, but there isn't enough extra for Luna to eat. The skinnier cats tend to get this concept after a couple of days and eat more at a meal instead of grazing as much. Finally, you could consider changing to or adding a canned food meal. That may help the skinnier cat eat a "meal" instead of grazing. Canned food is less "addicting" and less fattening than dry food, so it might be beneficial for both cats. I use a timed feeder (CatMate C20) with canned food to keep my cats from waking me up too early in the morning. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
