What's the best diet food for my 9-month-old overweight kitten?

Any complete weight reduction food from companies like Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet or Purina would be suitable. You should also not free-feed your kitty but feed him twice a day according to the instructions on the bag.

At this age it is not recommended to put your kitten on a diet. I would just recommend feeding appropriately from here moving forward and your kitten should lose the extra kitty fat gradually as she grows. Also it is nearly impossible to be overweight to the point of causing any health concerns at this age (2 months). Follow the food guidelines on the back of your kitten food bag and also limit the amount of treats she gets. And most importantly, keep her active so that she remains healthy and slim. This can be a variety of dry and wet food and should not exceed more than 1 cup of dry food per day or more than 1 can per day. Ideally, this is based on your veterinarian's recommendations on how much to cut back which is based on how much she weighs and the kind of food she eats. Another alternative, is feeding her a weight loss diet that works great called Hill's Science Diet metabolic weight management diet. This is something you can buy online or at your local pet store. I know that bag is labeled for up to one year but I usually recommend that kittens switch to adult food at 7-8 months of age. So, yes, adult indoor food would be indicated here. Also, do not just keep the bowl full - measure out the daily amount she needs based on the recommendations on the bag of food you are feeding; split into multiple small meals. Feed her to her ideal weight and not her current weight. Example: if she is 12 pounds and should be 9 pounds then use the feeding recommendation for a 9 pound cat. Always feed to the low end of the range the bag gives you especially since you are giving hearts and kidneys as well. The amount to feed does vary based upon the activity level, calories within the food and the individual metabolism. Feeding multiple cats is hard when one wants to over eat. Most kittens will eat about 1/2-3/4 cup at this age BUT this is highly variable. A good option is to separate the kittens during feeding time into separate rooms with the door shut. Don't leave food down at all times. Feed them 3 times a day. Another option is to purchase a smart feeder that reads the microchips.
