Depending on how much exercise she gets, she may need more food. Usually about 4oz to 5 oz canned kitten food, split into two feedings should be enough, however you may have to feed more in summer as she is more active in summer. Some cats are tall and thin and it is their normal weight. However, for every 0.5kg that the kitten gains the caloric intake increases by about 50 calories . So at 1 kg he should be offered about 200 calories, and at 1.5 kg he should be offered about 250 calories. Once he is an adult and has stopped growing the caloric intake usually decreases to about 250-300 per day. This is average. Some require more and some less. Hi and thanks for posting! For Easel who is a spayed adult cat, she'll need about 220-250 calories a day to maintain her current weight and between 180-200 if she needs to lose weight. If Kovu is really 7 pounds like your profile says, he should be eating about 250 to 300 calories per day to gain weight. The caloric content can be easily found in the can or bag of food or online. Yes, you should definitely cut the food back. If she seems overly hungry when you cut the food back you may need to talk to your vet about putting her on a prescription weight loss diet. Prescription diets are low in calories (so they can eat more of it) and it is very filling (they are high in fiber). If she doesn't lose weight I would be very worried about her developing diabetes. Remember, you need to feed the amount of food recommended on the bag for their IDEAL weight. Ideally she should be between 10-12 pounds. The average indoor cat should have 20 calories per pound so you should only be feeding her 200-240 calories per day INCLUDING her treats.
