How to soothe my cat's impacted anal gland pain before the vet?

That area looks bad, and I'm concerned her anal sacs could be infected and ruptured. I'm also very concerned that Basel is in a lot of pain. Unfortunately there is no medication you can get for her over the counter, and she has to see a vet now. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Hello. I would use the povidone-iodine, as the chlorhex. may make Bob sick if he ingests it. Dilute the iodine about 50:50 with water & flush things as best you can twice a day. Applying a triple antibiotic would be fine, & make sure you put some sort of Elizabethan collar on him to prevent excessive licking. Poor girl. This does appear to be a possible anal gland abscess rupture. She will need antibiotics from your vet and anti-inflammatory medicaiton to get this to heal well. Most cats won’t let you flush this unless they are mildly sedated or restrained by a trained professional; therefore, I would not advise you trying to clean this area yourself. It’s best to take Rose in to your local vet in the morning to get this taken care of. She will be in discomfort until then, but these aren’t typically life threatening. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sorry that Java is having this issue. I suspect the infection did not completely clear and is now coming up again. The only real thing you can do at home is to "hot pack" the anal gland area. You can use a wet, warm wash cloth and hold it to the area for 5 minutes. Do it two to three times per day. If it doesn't help within 24 hours she should go back and see your vet again. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, sorry I could not see any pictures attached to your question. In general an anal gland abscess, wether is has ruptured or not, does not warrant a visit in the middle of the night. If Cleo is reasonably bright, it can wait until the morning. I would definitely recommend a check up though as it can be quite painful ! I would put an e collar to prevent Cloe to lick/groom the area.

However, if the abscess has burst and is discharging, it is a relief. As the puss comes out, the pressure goes down and abscess becomes less painful. You need to make sure that he is not trying to scratch the face as that could be painful. Your vet will be able to give him injections of antibiotics and pain relief.

He seems to have a big piece of poop stuck. That hurts a lot. Best take him to a vet tonight to remove it and check if there is an injury. You can gently try to put pressure to remove it yourself. put some gelatine or ointment around the inside of the anus to help it move. If you cannot move it fairly easily you will definitely need to take him to a petER tonight.
