Cat anal gland swelling again. How can I help release fluid at home?

Unfortunately costs can vary quite a bit depending on what needs to be done. If it is a "simple" anal gland abscess that has already ruptured, then Coconut might just need antibiotics and pain medications. Again, costs will differ depending on if your friend elects to have injectible medications or if they decide to give oral medications at home. However, if the area is more infected, Coconut may have to be sedated to have the area flushed and explored. The only home care options are to "warm pack" the area with a warm wash cloth applied to the area for up to 5 minutes (as tolerated) and using an e-collar to prevent licking. Good luck! Hello. I would use the povidone-iodine, as the chlorhex. may make Bob sick if he ingests it. Dilute the iodine about 50:50 with water & flush things as best you can twice a day. Applying a triple antibiotic would be fine, & make sure you put some sort of Elizabethan collar on him to prevent excessive licking. There is no safe over the counter medication for cats. You can try to apply a warm compress to help alleviate some discomfort. You can let her lick it, but it will likely rupture from her messing with it, and this may relieve some pressure. If that happens, you can try to flush is with a little water, but be careful this may be uncomfortable and she may not let you do it. I would try to get her to a vet in the morning because it will need antibiotics to get well completely

When you say he is still sick, I understand that you are concerned he has a fever; but what other symptoms is he showing? Is he vomiting? When you mention he was sitting in the litter box for hours, is he constipated? Was your vet concerned about constipation when you took him in? I suspect that the white thick fluid was from Oreo's anal glands. As far as what you should do at this time, follow the instructions from your vet for the mediations, and if you feel like Oreo is getting worse, or that the medication isn't helping, take him back to your vet. If your vet is closed for the holiday, they will have a message of where you should call if you have an emergency. Please seek emergency care if: *Oreo is becoming very lethargic, is reluctant or unable to move, or seems very painful. *If Oreo is spending a lot of time in the box posturing to urinate and no urine is coming out *If Oreo is vomiting all water and food or if he has gone more than 3 entire days without eating anything *If breathing becomes labored (working hard to breathe) at any point Otherwise, call your vet tomorrow and get him back in fro a recheck. Sorry to hear that Butter cup is having a recurring issue. In most cases, there isn't much you can do to hasten the recovery. Simply keep the area clean and preventing any licking is the best that can be done. Typically the area is flushed out initially and sometimes antibiotics are utilized. In cases of recurrence, sometimes the anal sacs are actually removed entirely (as this is the only way to absolutely know that it will not happen again). If surgical removal is something you opt to do, your veterinarian may or may not refer you elsewhere for this type of procedure. While not extremely complicated, some veterinarians prefer not to do surgery in this anatomic region due to the possible complications associated with fecal incontinence. Hope this helps.

This is a spontaneous thing that can happen in pets with anal gland problems, where the anal glands fill up and are not able to express normally. We think this is caused by an underlying allergy, which can be discussed with your vet. Sometimes giving your pet a high fiber diet can help prevent reoccurence. Peanut Butter needs to see your vet for a short course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine to help this wound heal properly. He may also need the anal gland to be flushed thoroughly while under a mild sedative. I would recommend scheduling an appt for him soon to get this taken care of. In the meantime, you can purchase an e-collar from your local pet store and place it on him to deter him from licking the area and making the inflammation/irritation worse. Poor guy. The only thing you can safely do at home is warm compress the area, remove any scab that forms over the hole so it can drain and apply a triple antibiotic ointment. We do not recommend that you give any oral medications. He really should see your Veterinarian for antibiotics and anit-inflammatories. they would also express the anal glands and make sure the other side isn't infected.
