My cat's anal gland ruptured. What safe home remedies can I use?

Unfortunately costs can vary quite a bit depending on what needs to be done. If it is a "simple" anal gland abscess that has already ruptured, then Coconut might just need antibiotics and pain medications. Again, costs will differ depending on if your friend elects to have injectible medications or if they decide to give oral medications at home. However, if the area is more infected, Coconut may have to be sedated to have the area flushed and explored. The only home care options are to "warm pack" the area with a warm wash cloth applied to the area for up to 5 minutes (as tolerated) and using an e-collar to prevent licking. Good luck! There is no safe over the counter medication for cats. You can try to apply a warm compress to help alleviate some discomfort. You can let her lick it, but it will likely rupture from her messing with it, and this may relieve some pressure. If that happens, you can try to flush is with a little water, but be careful this may be uncomfortable and she may not let you do it. I would try to get her to a vet in the morning because it will need antibiotics to get well completely

The only real thing you can do at home is to "hot pack" the anal gland area. You can use a wet, warm wash cloth and hold it to the area for 5 minutes. Do it two to three times per day. If it doesn't help within 24 hours she should go back and see your vet again. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Stormy! I would shave the fur away from the wound then clean it well with water and a mild soap (avoid hydrogen peroxide). Then apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. The most important thing is to have Stormy wear and E-collar to prevent licking and keep him indoors. He should see a Vet as soon as possible to at a minimum get antibiotics but to also see if surgery is required to close the wound. I would call your local SPCA to see if they offer a low cost Veterinary clinic. I hope this helps and I wish Stormy a speedy recovery!

In this case a picture would be really helpful to understand the extension of the damage and offer you the best treatment options. Antibiotics are likely to be needed, but disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any). This is a spontaneous thing that can happen in pets with anal gland problems, where the anal glands fill up and are not able to express normally. We think this is caused by an underlying allergy, which can be discussed with your vet. Sometimes giving your pet a high fiber diet can help prevent reoccurence. Peanut Butter needs to see your vet for a short course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine to help this wound heal properly. He may also need the anal gland to be flushed thoroughly while under a mild sedative. I would recommend scheduling an appt for him soon to get this taken care of. In the meantime, you can purchase an e-collar from your local pet store and place it on him to deter him from licking the area and making the inflammation/irritation worse. Poor guy. Hello. If you have or can purchase a skin antiseptic, one with either 2% chlorhexidine or 1% povidine iodine, then you can gently clean this 2 times daily. Antibiotics would hasten healing, & if the wound is not looking better by early next week, I would consider a veterinary visit. But by keeping this clean, it will heal, & yes, this has the look of a typical cat bite abscess, so he did get into an argument with another cat.
