Why is my senior cat throwing up whole food and losing weight?

Poor Sweetie! In older cats, I would be concerned that the vomiting is caused by kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, a foreign body, or intestinal lymphoma. I would take her into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly an ultrasound to determine what is causing her vomiting. Once the cause is found, the vet can recommend a possible treatment.

BW may have tooth pain or could be nauseous. I recommend giving him canned food which you can water down and make into a gravy, scrambled eggs, low fat cottage cheese, or chicken. I'm glad he will be seeing the vet tomorrow and hopefully they can help him feel better!

I would agree that Pete should be seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine him and discuss the need for additional diagnostics, such as systemic bloodwork. Marley is a very handsome boy! I'd have him checked out by a vet for a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis. In senior cats, there are medical conditions that can cause vomiting such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and kidney disease, and those tests I mentioned above can screen him for them. You may want to look at his teeth, especially his molars (cheek teeth). Mikkel may have a lot of tartar on his teeth and severe inflammation of his gums which then hurt when he eats dry food. If you see brown concrements on his teeth, then he should be seen by a veterinarian and get his teeth cleaned under anesthesia. There is no need to have a tooth ache, and the bacteria in tartar can actually cause heart and kidney problems.

With gastrointestinal disease, sometimes the intestines are just unable to absorb nutrients regardless of the type of food you feed. So, it is important to feed Elvis whatever he will eat. There are no natural remedies, as there is no quick medical fixes, either. Oral steroids often help for a while, but then other medications are often needed. You can try some of the cat foods labeled as sensitive stomach or sensitive skin. The best ones are made by Science Diet & Royal Canin. I would also try him on a good probiotic, like Purina's FortiFlora. It really does seem to help some of these cats with GI issues. I hope this helps Elvis with his weight loss & vomiting.

In an older cat, my first thought would be dental disease. This would be painful for Krinkle, cause him to eat less, and subsequent weight loss. It could also be that he has diabetes, kidney failure, or hyperthyroidism. Having him seen by a vet this week is a good idea. I hope this helps!
