My old cat is losing weight and throwing up. What food should I try?

Pet's info: Cat | Bengal | Male | neutered | 15 years and 7 months old | 9 lbs

My cat is 15 years old, lately he has been losing weight, but seems to be eating more actually. he also drinks a lot more water, sometimes so much that he ends up throwing up. his vet said he has some type of gastro intestine disorder and that the only cure was giving him a specialize canned food. the cat will not eat this, but his regular food seems to not be giving him the nutrients his needs or his isn't absorbing any nutrients since he is losing weight. Any natural remedies for this?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. With gastrointestinal disease, sometimes the intestines are just unable to absorb nutrients regardless of the type of food you feed. So, it is important to feed Elvis whatever he will eat. There are no natural remedies, as there is no quick medical fixes, either. Oral steroids often help for a while, but then other medications are often needed. You can try some of the cat foods labeled as sensitive stomach or sensitive skin. The best ones are made by Science Diet & Royal Canin. I would also try him on a good probiotic, like Purina's FortiFlora. It really does seem to help some of these cats with GI issues. I hope this helps Elvis with his weight loss & vomiting.

I would recommend taking Oliver back to the vet for re-evaluation. The vet may decide that retesting for diabetes and hyperthyroidism is a good idea - sometimes in the early stages of disease the tests would be very close to the normal range. If those tests are normal, then IBD should be considered. The most digestible diet without a prescription would be canned cat food, like Fancy Feast. The only way to help him gain weight is to get him to eat more food.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Laundry. There are a number of anti-nausea medications that can be helpful for Laundry. And if your veterinarian has not recently checked his blood work (including a thyroid level) and blood pressure, I would certainly recheck those values to make sure that they are normal. Then, you can discuss the best anti-nausea medication with your veterinarian to help Laundry feel better. They will not want to do a teeth cleaning on him if he is not feeling well, so be sure to have them evaluate Laundry and solve this problem first. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. You can change her food to a hypoallergenic or sensitive stomach formula such as science diet I/D. These are very bland and easy to digest. You can also get probiotics for cats to add to the food to help Sometimes vomiting can be from an infection, cancer or inflammatory bowel. Your vet can start testing for these thing if the above doesn’t help

Hello. I am so sorry that Oscar has such a sad diagnosis. Unfortunately, either one of these can cause a significant loss of appetite. The only two appetite stimulants we have for cats are mirtazapine & cyproheptadine, & even these are not miracle drugs. Some cats prefer foods that are warm, some prefer them when cold, so you can try this. Hand feeding may work a bit as well. You can also talk to your vet about the possibility of adding some anti-nausea medication like Cerenia. Hopefully, you can at least get Oscar to eat a little more for as long as possible. My senior feral cat is losing weight and not eating. What food helps?

As cats age, they can develop different diseases that can cause them to lose muscle mass and fat. By feeding a different food may not help him. He could also have intestinal parasites. If he is a feral cat I would leave him be. I would not want to risk trying to catch him in case he tries to bite. Hello, thank you for your question about Pete. I am sorry to hear that he is not feeling well. Inappetance and vomiting can be signs of many underlying conditions. I would agree that Pete should be seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine him and discuss the need for additional diagnostics, such as systemic bloodwork. If Pete becomes extremely stressed prior to his appointment, you could discuss administering a sedative/anti-anxiety medication prior to his visit with your veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!
