My senior cat keeps vomiting. How can I prevent future episodes?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 14 years and 2 months old | 11.5 lbs

My 14 year old cat has had 3 recent episodes of acute vomiting. The first one happened June 2020, the second happened October 2020 and the third happened Jan 2021. He recovered from the first 2 episodes but the third one was worst and we ended up bringing him to the hospital. The hospital treated him for pancreatitis/cholangitis. I was wondering if there was anything I can do to prevent these episodes? diet? Should I take him to my regular vet for tests? He is fine otherwise

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Episodes of acute vomiting like these can be related to pancreatitis, bile ducts and gall bladder infection, gastritis, food indiscretion and more.
It would be worth to do a blood test to check Louie's pancreas and liver function. If the test for pancreas is positive, Louie's would definitely benefit from low fat diet.
