Why is my senior cat peeing dark urine outside the litter box?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 14 years and 9 months old | 8.5 lbs

My cat lives in a multi cat household, she is 15 and for the last 3yrs or so has taken to urinate in a certain area of my kitchen. I have noticed that the urine has become very dark even though she is still a healthy weight, both eating and drinking water. Should I be worried or is it part of the aging process?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dark urine is often an indication of dehydration or not drinking enough water. I recommend that you check and make sure that she is drinking enough water. Sometimes using several water bowls throughout the house is helpful. Another way to stimulate her to eat canned food which is high in water content. Good luck!
