Why is my senior cat peeing dark urine outside the litter box?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pheobe. I agree that it does look dark. Has she had free access to water today? If she is a bit dehydrated, then the urine will be darker than normal. It does not appear to contain blood which is good. Offer her plenty of water and if it is still dark tomorrow, then she should see her veterinarian for a urinalysis. I hope this information helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! With your description, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and having his urine tested. He may have crystals in his urine with a secondary urinary tract infection. If he does have crystals in his urine, there is a chance he already has stones in his bladder or will develop bladder stones down the road in the near future. With crystals and stones, male cats run the risk of getting a urinary obstruction, which can be life threatening if not treated as it will cause backup of the urine into the kidneys and lead to kidney failure and other systemic abnormalities secondary to the obstruction. I would have this checked sooner rather than later because if you wait until he is obstructed, it can easily cost up to $3000 for treatment. If you take him now, it is the exam fee, urine test and treatments, which come nowhere near $3000. I hope this helps guide you int he right direction! Tiger may have a urinary tract infection or other issue causing dehydration and darker colored urine. I'd recommend having her examined by a veterinarian and also having a urine sample checked out. If necessary she can be given fluids as an injection to rehydrate her and be prescribed antibiotics to treat any infection that may be present. You can try offering her an all canned food diet to try to maintain her hydration. However, I do think she should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. I recommend that you have Hope evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. That urine looks very very concentrated, which is suggestive that Marshall is dehydrated. This coincides with him not drinking. I would recommend getting him to a vet if you can, otherwise try to increase his water intake. Try getting him canned food, and adding water to the food, or providing him with fresh water, or running water (some cats like this). When you can I would get him to a vet, as I am concerned there is something serious going on inside him. Best of luck with Marshall, I hope he feels better soon!

The longer he holds his urine the darker in color and stronger odor it can have. Also if he dehydrated it has potential to make the urine a little darker. Since he has issues with a litter box, I would have his urine checked for a UTI or crystals to see if that is complicating the situation and causing some of these problems. You can also add canned food to make sure he is getting plenty of fluids
