What causes my senior cat's neck to crack after an old leg injury?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 17 lbs

Hi! My cat is 9 yrs old, male and neutered. Lately I've noticed his neck "cracks" sometimes when he turn his head when grooming. He was hit by a car when he was 3, and never fully recovered as he broke his thighbone. He's got steel plates in his leg from two surgeries but you can only notice a limp when he strains himself during exercise. Could this be related because of possible unevenly use of muscles/strain caused by this old injury? I read this should be treated in humans. Regards, Marthe

There may be some arthritis that could be age related or related to his old injuries. Ideally, he should be examined and possibly x-rayed by your veterinarian. If he is painful, your veterinarian may prescribe medication for pain management.

So sorry that he is having this problem. You could try a joint supplement, like Dasuquin or Cosequin for cats, and see if that helps. If not, he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can take an x-ray to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. He may need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications and your vet can prescribe.

This could potentially be a sign of arthritis. Unfortunately there are no human pain medications you can give Garlic. Many human ones are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I'd have him seen by a vet for this problem. The vet can prescribe safe pain medication if needed.

Poor CJ! It sounds like he is in pain if he's walking slower, struggling to lay down and get up, and cannot bend to clean himself. I would be concerned that he has a problem with his neck or back. It possible he was injured. My advice is to rest him tonight, and take him into a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing his pain, and can treat him for it. The vet can also prescribe pain medication as needed. Please do not give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. Best of luck.

My senior cat's limping for weeks after a fall; is her leg serious?

If the lameness has persisted for 3 weeks and you notice that there is a difference in the shape of the shoulder area and leg position, I fear that the injury could be more serious than a sprain. Muscle injuries normally recover in 4-5 days of rest and antinflammatories. I would recommend to have him reassessed, there is a medication that can be given at home prior to the visit to help with the stress, I would ask your vet. Hope this helps !

My cat's front leg is in pain, but I see no injury. What should I do?

I am sorry Tikvichko is not feeling well. If he is an outdoor cat I would be concerned about an abscess/infection or fracture/break in his bone. Most cats will heal from a broken bone over time however I would call your vet for pain medication for Tikvichko. Also I would recommend a good physical exam because if an infection is present he will need antibiotics to resolve the issue. Hope he feels better soon
