Why is my young cat's hind leg cracking when he jumps? Arthritis?

This could be arthritis. Given Gizmoe's age, this can be when it first starts appearing and can cause the cracking noises you are hearing. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I'd have him seen by a vet in the morning to diagnose if he does have arthritis and to get pain medication should he have it. I hope this helps!

I do recommend treatment to give her the best quality life she can have. See your vet to help rule out something more nefarious (because cancer and other things also can cause problems in older cats). Then have a discussion about safe medications and supplements for cats. it sounds like your kitty may be in pain. This could be from an injury, or arthritis. I suggest you take Felix to your veterinarian for an exam and possibly x-rays. If he has arthritis pain, your vet will likely prescribe meloxicam for him, which is an NASAID which reduces inflammation and pain.

Most likely this is arthritis. If he isn't limping then this is aa good indicator that it isn't causing too much pain yet. You can try over the counter joint supplements like Cosequin to help replenish fluid in the joint and also to help slow down the progression of arthritis. If he develops pain or limping then it is best to have the limb radiographed to get a better idea of what is happening internally, and also to get a prescription for stronger medications to help with pain.
