Why are my 7-year-old cat's hind legs making cracking noises?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

I think I know what it could be but want to see. So my cat Gizmoe he is almost 7years old and I have notice every so often when he walks a certain way his hind legs are make a crack noise, like how you would crake your knuckles. Just wondering what it could be? What could be causing it? Could it turn into a big issue for him? And any information you can give me on this subject. - Thanks

This could be arthritis. Given Gizmoe's age, this can be when it first starts appearing and can cause the cracking noises you are hearing. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I'd have him seen by a vet in the morning to diagnose if he does have arthritis and to get pain medication should he have it. I hope this helps!
