My senior cat is limping on a front leg. What causes it and what helps?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 14 years and 7 months old | 11.4 lbs

My cat is 15 yrs. and has been favoring a front leg. There is no swelling or wounds. Most of the time he is fine. A couple times a day a will notice him holding up his paw and or walking on 3 legs, then just as quickly he walks normally again. This has been going on for about 3-4 months. I suspect arthritis. What can be done?

So sorry that he is having this problem. You could try a joint supplement, like Dasuquin or Cosequin for cats, and see if that helps. If not, he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can take an x-ray to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. He may need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications and your vet can prescribe.

I'm so sorry that Bingo is having this problem. (Getting older is hard on pets and us!) I certainly would recommend having your veterinarian examine Bingo to make sure it is only arthritis that you are dealing with and to discuss treatment options. There are a LARGE number of treatment options. I am attaching a link below with more information on treating arthritis.

One of my favorite treatment options for cats is Adequan, but if Bingo is that painful, then he may also need pain medication at least short term. One thing that is not included in that handout is acupuncture and cold laser treatment which can eliminate the need for medicating an arthritic cat long term (if they tolerate it).

Why did my healthy senior cat suddenly develop a bad leg limp?

Poor Kosho! She could have accidentally injured her limb at night while you were asleep. She could have severely strained a ligament, torn a ligament, broken a bone, or potentially could have an osteosarcoma. An osteosarcoma is a tumor of the bone in cats, the most common bone tumor cats can get. It would cause sudden and severe lameness. Unfortunately, cancer is always a possibility in an old cat. I would take Kosho into the vet today for an exam. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and x-rays to determine what is causing her limp and how best to treat it. She will also need some pain medication as well. Do not give her any human pain medications. Many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. Please take her into a vet now.

Why does my cat's joints click when he walks, but he's not limping?

Most likely this is arthritis. If he isn't limping then this is aa good indicator that it isn't causing too much pain yet. You can try over the counter joint supplements like Cosequin to help replenish fluid in the joint and also to help slow down the progression of arthritis. If he develops pain or limping then it is best to have the limb radiographed to get a better idea of what is happening internally, and also to get a prescription for stronger medications to help with pain.

Why is my 13-year-old cat limping with a swollen leg and hip knot?

It could be that Percy has injured himself leading to the limping and swelling. Limping means he is in pain, and unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to cats, and are fatal if given. I would take him into a vet now for treatment. Best of luck.

My senior cat is limping. When should I take her to the vet?

I am sorry to hear about Luna. If Luna is limping there are many different possible causes, including soft tissue injury (such as a muscle sprain/strain, torn ligament), a fracture (it isn't always obvious when a pet breaks a bone if the fracture is not displaced), a torn or sore toenail, a skin infection of the toenails or bottom of the foot, nerve disorders, or in older pets tumors of the muscle or bone. I would recommend examination by a vet if the issue has been present since Sunday with no improvement. Unfortunately there are no safe pain medications available over the counter for cats, so I would just try to keep her quiet/restrict her activity/keep her indoors until she can be seen.

My cat has a swollen leg and is limping. What's wrong and what to do?

If you cat goes outdoors, this is very likely the result of a cat bite. It is amazing how small a cat bite wound can be, but under the skin, infection is building up. Have Coco evaluated tomorrow by your vet because if this is a bite wound, the sooner antibiotics are started, the sooner she will start feeling better.
