How much does it really cost to get a cat, even if it's free?

I would have a cause for concern with a very cheap adoption, unless the cat comes from a reputable organization like the SPCA. A very cheap adoption suggests the cat is coming from a backyard breeder, which typically do not to genetic testing to make sure that heritable diseases are passed from generation to generation. In addition, backyard breeders often keep their animals in very poor conditions, and are more concerned with making money that taking proper care of their animals. I would never trust a very cheap adoption, there is a reason why it's cheap and it's usually not a good reason. You will want to buy a cat from a breeder who has years of experience, does genetic testing on the father and mother, and allows you to see where the animals are kept and raised. The cost of obtaining a cat will depend on where you're getting it - different rescues and shelters will all have their own policies regarding adoption fees and whether they are different for spayed/neutered vs. intact animals. There are normally no significant differences in the costs of taking care of spayed/neutered animals vs. intact animals long term.

Hi, if you have a stray, you definitely want to get him spayed or neutered and vaccinated. The best thing to do is find a low cost spay/neuter clinic in your area or a trap neuter return clinic who deals with strays. That will be the least expensive route. He should get his Rabies, FVRCP (feline distemper), and possibly the FELV (feline leukemia) vaccine. That's three that cats usually get. The cost will vary depending on where you take him. It can b anywhere from $5 a vaccine at a low cost clinic or $20 a vaccine. I would do some searching in your area to find the best price. Good luck!!

I would check online at local pet sites online, Facebook, or check local cat rescues. Keep in mind that unless the kitten has been seen by a vet, you don't have a guarantee it is healthy. I hope you find one soon :-)

Hello. The cats & kittens offered at Petco are actually managed by individual rescue groups. Prices will differ from rescue to rescue. All cats can do well if they are played with & fussed over once you get home. Can they get into trouble & sometimes make a mess? Absolutely. If you do not want hair & dander & kitty litter tracked all over the house, you should not have a pet. Cats may need to have their claws trimmed ( NOT REMOVED ) & plenty of opportunities to exercise their claws, otherwise they will scratch your furniture, moldings & walls. You will need different types of scratching surfaces, plenty of toys, a water & food dish, litter box ( or 2 ), & lots of patience. All cats are individuals, so when you go looking to adopt a cat, take your family & give yourself plenty of time to spend with your potential pet, & ask lots of questions about them. You can buy a cat from Craig's list for example, but I do not recommend buying a cat sight unseen. I never recommend that. You should always check out the home where it's coming from, you can assess it's condition, and seeing the cat makes sure you are getting the animal you have paid for. In addition, there are no websites where you can just buy a cat and have it shipped to you. I hope this helps.

Rescues al vary in the amount of vet care pets receive. The county run humane societies seem to be some of the most thorough but this all depends.
