Is buying a cat online a good idea, and what are the potential risks?

You can do it, but it is not recommended. You may be purchasing a very sick puppy or it may not be the breed(s) listed on the paperwork. It is never recommended to buy a puppy from a pet store or online store. Adopt from your local shelter or choose a reputable breeder to avoid inadvertently supporting puppy mills.

I would check online at local pet sites online, Facebook, or check local cat rescues. Keep in mind that unless the kitten has been seen by a vet, you don't have a guarantee it is healthy. I hope you find one soon :-)

Hello. The best anyone can do is call your cat a Domestic Shorthair. Perhaps in the future, we will have the ability to distinguish breeds through DNA , like we can do with dogs now. But, the entire cat genome for every breed has not been established yet. This will help bring everything inside before getting the cat as cats tend to get very stressed when there is a lot of movement or noise in their in new environments. Adding a new cat to your home can be a lot of fun, but can be stressful both for you and for your current cat. Unfortunately, there is never a guarantee that both cats will become best buds or even tolerate one another very well. However, you can take some steps to slowly introduce a new cat to your home to ease the transition and make it as low-stress as possible for both cats. Prior to bringing home your new cat, consider using calming pheromones such as the [Comfort Zone® Calming Diffuser](). Also, be sure that both cats have been spayed or neutered to eliminate hormone-influenced aggression issues. Initially, keep the new cat isolated in a separate room (oftentimes a spare bedroom or the bathroom works well), allowing the cats to smell and paw at one another under the door. After a few days of this introduction, allow the cats to explore each other’s space for a few hours. In another day or so, allow them to see one another with an exposed barrier between them (i.e. a crate, screen door, etc.). If all seems to be going well introducing both cats, allow them to meet in an open room with plenty of supervision. Be sure that both cats have a way to leave the room should they feel stressed or threatened. Continue supervising all contact for at least a few days, possibly a few weeks, to assure that all goes well.

It should be fine getting a kitten with having a toddler in the house, but you will have to work with the baby on gentle touch with the kitten. I personally would recommend getting a ragdoll. They are laid back cats, and from my own experience, very good with kids. I have a young son, and when he was learning gentle touch with animals, the ragdoll never once swiped or hissed at him. They are also very loving cats. Living in London, I would not recommend allowing the cat outside. There would be too many chances the kitten could be hit by a car, taken by another family, or attacked by another cat. It's also recommended that ragdolls be inside only cats due to their gentle nature. If you do decide to let the kitten outdoors, I would make sure to be with it outside especially when it's young so that it doesn't wander off.
