Are spayed or neutered cats cheaper to adopt or care for long-term?

Spay or neuter costs can vary based on geographic location, clinic and size/age of the pet. Your best option to get an accurate answer would be to contact local clinics directly and request an estimate. Most will provide one as a matter of hospital policy.

You can find people giving them away for free on places like Craigslist. However, these cats may or may not be healthy and will need some level of basic veterinary care (vaccines, spay/neuter and deworming), which can be $300 or more. The most cost-effective option for getting a cat is through a reputable, local shelter (i.e. SPCA, Humane Society, etc.). They will charge an adoption fee (about $100- $150), but you will be getting a cat that has been checked by a veterinarian, vaccinated, spay/neutered, dewormed and other treatment or testing as necessary. The cost of a spay varies greatly but the least expensive option typically is doing it at your local humane society which you may qualify for. The males are usually less expensive to have surgery than the females. For health reasons other than population control getting them all done would be best. A female cat in heat is annoying and can attract other males in the surrounding areas to come. Not getting the males fixed will create a territory problem and increase fighting. I would ask your local vets if they have any assistance or know if any local programs that can help provide these services at a reduced rate since you have a large volume of cats

Unfortunately, it is against the terms of service for the site for an expert to have contact with a user outside of the site. It's awesome you want to have her spayed. Because she comes to you, you will be able to pick her up and place her in a carrier. I would take her to a local clinic, or low cost clinic in your area. You can do an internet search for low cost clinics in the area, or check with your local SPCA to see if they offer cheap spays (many do offer this option). The vet clinic can spay her for you, and can give her the vaccines and other treatments she needs. Congrats on taking in this cat, she will be lucky to have you :-)

From experience, Nationwide and even Costco have great plans but everyone has different needs and wants so you will have to call around and get specific quotes from the insurance companies. Some veterinary clinics offer wellness plans that cover the spay / neuter. I would also call around to various clinics and see if there is a wellness plan you can enroll the kitten on to help cover the costs of preventative spaying / neutering. I hope this helps!
